Formed at the start of 2004 at warwick uni, mainly through chance that certain people were going to certain gigs with no one to go with as they were new to the uni and they happened across local boy and guitar player, me (Phil), who was going to both of the afore mentioned gigs. By chance, no....perhaps even fate, one happened to be a singer/guitarist (Ben) and the other a drummer (Lee), and so the seeds of the Standoff were born.
After a month or so of making noise without a bass player, Lee piped up in practice and spoke of word of a potential bass player (Rosy) whom he resided with. Secret meetings followed. (ie. watching the legendary film BIG at the student cinema) and an awesome foursome was born.
The real job of making songs did not really begin till the start of the next uni year, September 2004. 3 songs and a intrumental, with a riff some cannot deny, were produced and entry to the 2005 Battle of the Bands was granted. The draw made for the heats and The Standoff found themselves in the 'Group of Death' with 3 well practiced, gig veterens and all potential winners of the overall competition.
The day came, the standoff played, the crowd roared, standoff's name was chanted throughout the land, mistakes were made, nervous poses adopted, awkwardly, judges judged and the crowd awaited a result.
3rd. not bad. one even putting us 2nd. we were compared with Biffy Clyro, Elvis Costello, Funeral For A Friend and even System of a Down. Judges clearly knew there stuff (or just said a few bands they knew the name of who played guitars). With new confidence a fourth song was penned 'What You Do' (title will probably change cos it's lame) and 2 gigs at Robbins Well in Leamington followed, even headlining the first as everyone was kinda there to see us, nothing to do with talent (he says knowing full well the skillz could not be denied by the other bands and they felt intimidated by our presence)
on Tuesday 20th September 2005, the band entered the studio for a live recording at Born In A Barn Studios ( www.borninabarnstudio.co.uk ) with producer Roger Greasby (whose voice bore a remarkable resemblance to the legendary John Tickle of Big Brother/Braniac fame "naughty tomato plants!"). 16 full and hearty hours later and at past 2 a.m. a CD was finished, and the 4 songs you see before you, warts and all, are what was produced. hope you enjoy them, keep an ear out for the mistakes and then ignore them. I thank you.
The band has since lost Rosy to the French hordes but she has been replaced by a new thick stringer Joel.......the bands quest for world domination continues unabaited.
Please also check out RANDOM . my mates project where I play guitars occasionally.
