MANGOS WITH CHILI
the floating cabaret of QTPOC bliss, dreams, sweat, sweets & nightmares
landing April, 2007
two weeks of history-making, electrifying and revolutionary performance,
in celebration of our lives, stories, survival, and the legacies we are creating
for future generations of queer and trans people of color
Mangos With Chili is a multi-racial, multi-gendered and multi-genre traveling cabaret of queer and trans of color performance artists working in theater, dance, spoken word, burlesque and drag.
Inspired by similar traveling roadshows like the Tranny Roadshow and the Sex Workers Art Show, in 2006 sister femme vixen writers and performance artists MarÃa Cristina Rangel (aka Ms. Cherry Galette) and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha decided to start a similar tour featuring brilliant queer and trans artists of color. Using their experience creating events in Toronto, Boston, New York and the West Coast, the first Mangos With Chili tour is slated to hit the Northeast and Midwest for April 2007.
Using performance to tell stories of race, class, survival, sex, dreams, and trans, femme and genderqueer identities that span Sri Lanka to the Philippines to Aztlán to the Caribbean to Morocco to Brooklyn to migrant small town Washington state, Mangos With Chili is a groundbreaking performance cabaret, taking This Bridge Called My Back into the 21st century.
Our spring lineup consists of Kay Barrett, Ignacio Gilberto Rivera, Thomas Andre Bardwell (aka Miss Nicholle Pride), Ching-in Chen, Nico Dacumos, Dulani, Suhayl Ramirez, Victor Tobar, Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and MarÃa Cristina Rangel (aka Miss Cherry Galette), as well as guest artists.
The show will contain both collaborative and individual work, bringing a wide spectrum of breathtaking queer and trans artists of color to universities, community colleges and community art spaces.
