Mosebacke

Welcome to Mosebacke Etablissement
Since the 18th century Mosebacke and Södra teatern have been centres for amusement and entertainment in Stockholm. Mosebacke supposedly and probably got its name from a miller in 1650 known as Anders Jönsson Moses who owned a mill on the hill. The name itself, Mosebacke, means Moses..hill.
In the 18th century an inn, ”Stockholms vapen”, was opened and became somewhat of a centre for divertissement and amusement. Then, in 1852, a new owner, C.A. Wallman tore down and replaced the old inn with Södra teatern. A fire in 1857 destroyed the building but it was swiftly rebuilt by 1859.
After experiencing some trubbles at the turn of the century it started drawing crowds again and by the 1920..s it had become somewhat of a Place Pigalle in Stockholm with various shows and vaudeville acts. (A person who actually used to frequent these shows was a shy little girl called Greta Gustafsson, later to be known as Greta Garbo.
After the show, the audience would visit the café, ”Teaterkällaren”, for drinks and refreshments. If you look closely when you enter Mosebacke you will see that it still says ”Teaterkällaren” above the entrance.
In 1970, Bosse Stenhammar and Git Magnusson opened Mosebacke Etablissement. The place being in fact no more than a restaurant ˆ the former café ”Teaterkällaren” ˆ they built a stage and installed the necessary equipment for live performances, thereby making Mosebacke into one of the foremost places for live performances of various genres in Stockholm. Many artist in Sweden has launched his or her career at Mosebacke and at the same time it was visited by several world renowned artists, such as. Eartha Kitt, Arlo Guthrie, Dexter Gordon, Toots Thielemans, Scott Hamilton, Albert King and many many more. Being a place of poetry as well Mosebacke was visited by such notabilities as Derek Walcott, Joseph Brodsky, Kenzaburo Oe and Seamus Heaney, all Nobel Prise winners.
It was during this era that the magnificent terrace really came into use offering dance, live music and food and beverages, a tradition that to this day continues, making Mosebacke one of the most visited and enjoyable outdoor establishments in Stockholm.
After 29 years of hard work, after having established an international reputation for Mosebacke as a place for live performances of practically all kinds of genres, Bosse Stenhammar and Git Magnusson left with full confidence, the current owners Conrad and Johan in charge of the establishment and thereby launching a new era.
