About Me

Listen Live Every Thursday night from 10pm to Midnight (EST)
***You must have a Quicktime Player installed***
"Corrupting the airwaves and pissing off the F.C.C. one show at a time........."
Hosted by Tony Ionno, Pop Gun Radio is a variety show...... well sort of. Broadcasting every Thursday night from 10pm to Midnight (EST) from the campus of UMass Dartmouth, this strange mix of new releases, classics, b sides, spoken word, comedy and politics is unlike anything you will hear anywhere else. Listen from Cape Cod to south Boston and throughout the entire state of Rhode Island on 89.3fm or worldwide using the link below.
"Though relatively still underground locally, this secretly popular WUMD gem of a show has quickly developed a cult of dedicated listeners. Tony combines some of the best new releases in college radio with forgotten classics, b-sides and his own brilliant signature mix of subversive politics and humor. Do not miss Pop Gun Radio!" - The Providence Phoenix
The show consists primarily of indie rock though you will also find an irreverent and oddball mix of punk, underground hip hop, experimental, emo & screamo, electronic, mashups, and anything else that piques the interest of the listeners. This is all combined with hidden snippets of politics and humor to make you unconsciously think while you dance.
Most importantly though, the show relies on your requests and input. Requests can be made anytime during the week through this MySpace page or on air during the show (10pm to Midnight EST) by calling our request line at (508) 999-8150.
Thanks for tuning in. Feel free to loiter here on the MySpace page during the show as we are active both on the telephone and the website. Drop us a line or give us a call during the show.
Pop Gun Radio is now part of Indie Rock Thursdays on WUMD! Every Thursday night from 7pm to midnight is now all indie rock! Beginning at 7pm with 24/7 Pulse featuring Dorrie. At 9pm is The Indie Hour and from 10pm to midnight is Pop Gun Radio.
Please Note: I do not approve most friend requests from bands for this page. No offense, but any band you see on this page may very well be heard on the show and most I seek out and add myself. I am currently receiving as many as 50 friend requests per day from bands and I just don't have time to listen to them all. Feel free to send a CD to the address to the left for radio play consideration.
Since the artists on my Friends list are hand selected, I encourage you to look through them. The majority you've probably never heard of, but I guarantee you will find some new music that you like from musicians who deserve the opportunity to be heard!

"Did I hear Shit/Fuck/etc.... in a song on your show?" - Probably. Music is art. Art is one's expression of life. I don't believe in censorship of another's art in any form. While you will never hear me utter these words on air, you may very well hear them a few times during the course of an episode of Pop Gun Radio.
"Isn't that against FCC Rules" - You tell me. The FCC has what are called safe harbor hours. Safe harbor was created to 'protect' children from listening to anything that is considered 'indecent'.
According to the FCC indecent language is "language or material that depicts or describes, in terms of patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards, sexual or excratory activities or organs." It is against FCC rules to knowingly play anything that encompasses this rule between the hours of 6am and 10pm. I choose to air my show after 10pm because, as a parent myself, I know that some of what I play is not appropriate for children. Much like a large percentage of violent programming that children can see on television during daytime hours. If you -as an adult- do not like what I am airing, there are many other channels on your radio dial.
Between the hours of 10pm and 6 am, it is legal to play music that is considered indecent, but it must not be obscene. What is obscene you may ask? This is where it gets good. Obscene language can only be determined by a court of law. To be considered obscene a work must meet these three guidelines:
1. The work as a whole appeals primarily to the prurient interest.
2. The work as a whole violates contemporary community standards. (???)
3. The work as a whole is without any significant or redeeming social, artistic, political, or educational value.
The problem with these definitions is that the burden of proof here is on the government (not the accused) and dj's can face fines of up to $250,000 (note: it's now $500,000 as of 03/05) if they play or do something that is considered obscene.
If you've ever listened to my show, you know I am not a big fan of the FCC nor the current administration and political climate. There is a reason my show is on so late at night. Fear of the FCC is not that reason.
While I would never do anything to compromise the radio station, I will also never hesitate to state an opinion regarding issues that I feel passionate about.
Nor will I ever hesitate to play something that I feel is important or artistic due to it's content. It's for that reason that I hope everyone takes the time to learn about the new FCC regulations, and understand that we are slowly losing everything. I don't just mean just the new penalties and state of hysteria due to Janet Jackson's breast, Howard Stern's antics, and the Bush administration's ass kissing of the Christan Right. I mean they are giving away everything to the big corporations. It is nearly impossible for small organizations and non-profits to get a broadcasting license these days. It takes many years and thousands of dollars just for the chance to get one.
Do your part. Learn about whats happening and get involved here and here . The FCC was not created to be a censor and tell us what we can and can't listen to, nor was it created for the monetary benefit of large corporations like Clearchannel and Fox who are homogenizing our music and feeding us their corporate propaganda packaged as news.
Don't believe me? Read the FCC's own description of themselves here .
