About Me
Alex Alicea aka "Who Da Funk" has taken the House Music Scene by storm with his cutting edge sound. Never a trend follower, Alex's uncanny experimentation with diverse acoustics has led him to set greater and higher standards for himself and the house music industry. Alex has been a DJ since he was 14 – it was his “biggest passionâ€. If you’d told him, “there’s a party eight hours away, you’re going to play for free, but it’s going to be hot,†he would've been there. Finding fulfillment in DJing, Alex was ready for the next step. He took the advice of good friends Harry “Choo Choo†Romero and Jose Nunez and invested in production gear and began making tracks at home. Quickly Alicea's talent was evident to Harry Romero when he heard one of Alex's productions. Although rough around the edges, Romero shared Alex's vision and came in on its production utilizing his unique talent and expertise. This blend of creative perspectives produced the underground hit track-- So Lonely. Alicea soon joined forces with another, almost literal Subliminal “brother†– Jorge “DJ Lace†Jaramillo, Romero’s cousin. It was clear from the very beginning that Jaramillo's solid talent and experience, and Alicea’s impressive knowledge of house music would birth an innovative partnership. Thus, Who Da Funk was born.Who Da Funk quickly found success in the industry while establishing their names through solid innovative remixes of such artist as: Macy Gray, Bob Sinclair, Part T One and countless others. After tantalizing the industry with their unique sound, Subliminal’s head honcho Erick Morillo decided to co-launch a new label with Who Da Funk to cater to their unconventional style; thus creating Subusa Records. It was from this label that Who Da Funk became a worldwide powerhouse in dance music with the first release on the Subusa label Shiny Disco Balls. This trend setting sound showed the true genius behind Who Da Funk. It also served as the spark for WDF to work on remixes for artist such as Jennifer Lopez. Their much anticipated second release on Subusa Sting Me Red featuring Terra Deva also became a world-wide chart topper. Hence, solidifying Who Da Funk's place in the world of dance music. After a series of exhausting worldwide tours, and a performance on UK’s Top of the Pops, Who Da Funk decided to take a break. It was during this break that Alex decided to explore his solo career as an artist-- DJ/Producer.
Alex decided to turn his attention back to his original roots, DJing. Promoters world wide sought Alex for his talent as a DJ which quickly had Alicea trotting the globe again headlining at some of the hottest clubs worldwide such as: Space and Pacha in Ibiza, Crobar Miami, Ministry in Moscow, Creamfields in UK and festivals in Brazil as well as countless others. Armed with a new found perspective on dance music, Alex went back into his studio to work on new productions. Hearing Alex's unique sound, hip-hop mogul Sean P. Diddy Combs sought out Alex for a collaborative project. The resulting production combined the creative talent of Alex Alicea, P. Diddy Combs and Erick Morillo to create Dance I Said, featured on Erick Morillo's "My World" album. Alex then released Freak Out Of You, which brought him back to his underground base. He next produced the hit single Straight For You, which was battered by Pete Tong (Radio 1), Roger Sanchez and Erick Morillo-- reestablishing Alex Alicea as a chart toping producer in the industry. In the summer of 2008, Alex reconnected with P. Diddy to drop another bomb “Make a Movie.†Alicea has just put the finishing touches on his remix of his blockbuster hit “Shiny Disco Balls.†This much anticipated remix has created a great deal of buzz in the music world. Additionally, Alex just completed his collaboration with longtime friend and producer Jose Nunez on Pacha’s remix of Bob Marley’s classic “I Shot the Sheriff.â€
With all his success Alex Alicea still considers himself a student of the game with enough prior experience to give him the insight to keep his music on the cutting edge. He is currently working on a variety of projects ranging from DJ tours to both solo and collaborative productions. One of his next objectives is to release his highly anticipated debut album.
