Black Jesus was together for several years in the early to mid 1990's. The band went through several lineups, beginning as a 3 piece with Eric Thornton (currently with the Villains) on guitar, Chris Korbet on bass, and Barry Johnson on drums. Rusty Floyd (m-80s, Gods Will, Front Line) joined as the drummer and plays on both Black Lung Records and the Bowling Donut Comp. The band became a 4 piece when JBYRD (currently with The Abscondents) was added as the frontman. When Chris left the band to move out of town, Darbe Apostle joined in. Chris came back and Black Jesus became a 5 piece with Chris playing second guitar. We went through a slew of drummers (too many to name), two of whom died. Our drummers have included Greg Wise of the Unabombers (and now currently with The Abscondents), and Sergio Ponce of the Candy Snatchers. The band stopped playing in 1997. The band regrouped in 2006 for two shows and we hired a new drummer, Jaime McGuffey who played with The Bottle Babies, and is now with The Villains. One show in Charlottesville went great, while the one in our hometown was cancelled when a huge fight broke out and the police brought in the K-9s.
