African Queens
I hear all these sisters poems that do not even know the game
Now its time to talk about what I know is going to last
Beyond the time limits of the unmentioned past
I am praying that you are saying all that needs to be heard
Oh my dear sisters, have that last word
Of love for lost generations
Not gangs, jail and whores
Not pimps and drugs and misdirected wherefores
Not the terrible things that make generation X get brain sores
Because dear sisters we are all of queens
Close your eyes and relive that dream
Live beyond those lies and tell the story of how we need to reclaim our gloryWell, it is time to go beyond all those old folklores
All that Africa against Africa and get to the real scores
Lets talk about our real black sisters that paved the way, lets settle this shit
Before we end up killing each other day by day, this is a misdirected hitMy African roots grow richer with my age
Come with me and lift each other in aromas of honey, sugar and sage
Even before the birth of Christ
those queens were not rolling the dice
They were making it right
.. - Get Your Own
Amina, Queen of Zaria
Although this young woman was a teen, she did rein as the queen
At the age when some are still playing with dolls
She reined for years, fighting for us, built walls
She made the calls
Fought like a man
To save her land
Trained personally by her brother warriors that respected her place
There she battled, I image, in a breastplate of steel and lace
Candace, Empress of Ethiopia
This black woman was impeccable, so fly
Bordered Ethiopia in the wink of an eye
The opposition army of men could not pass
Afraid this black queen would kick their ass
Defeated by a black woman was their shame
Strength and strategy was her claimCleopatra VII, Queen of Kemet (now known as Egypt)
Youve heard of this one make no mistake
She was black and made mens loins ache
Beauty and powerful all wrapped up in one
Her superior powers were inferior to none
In a land of blacks, no she was not white
This would have in itself been a historical fight
There were many of these queens all buried shut tight with glue
And make no mistake they are an intimate part of you
They held it down and made gray skies blue
Strong as steel, black as night, raising babies while heading wars to fight
Fighting to keep us in the game
You could at least remember their name
They fought for our wealth and freedom
Until the guns came and we just could not beat themLets talk about keeping our young black men informed, not confused and sad
Baby, your roots were b-a-d bad
We are all birthed by women, lets start from scratch
The ones we came from were not shackled and latched
The ones we came from were righteous, intelligent and resourceful
If you dont know where you have been
How you gone get there and whenGet back our resistance to our elastic heritage, our royal lines
Talk about the thieves that have stole us blindTalk about the real positions of our sisters who did work it well
Move beyond the horrors about your slave background that is not fit to tell
If slavery was the beginning of our lives, we would have phased out long ago
And yes, those black lady warriors that held it down
Traces of their blood run through your veins even now
If you want to tell any story that may come out of your big mouth
Teach it, pray it, wear it, and say it
Tell the truth and know your past
For if you dont, our future will stay at half mastTell the truth of our real lineage, they are not going to tell
What is written of our history, is the beginning of our living in hellLeave alone the personal war of our race relations light skinned against dark
Stop and think and put your mind in park
The blacker the berry you know the rest
But, knowing your real roots will put your mind to the ultimate test
To teach your babies the truth cause they making us a mess
When we were always geared for the bestWell, no wonder you feel you are going against the grain
Because before slavery when we were caught by the lame
We were free, rich and totally sane
Hold on, wait a second lets tell it like it really is
Free ourselves of these ridiculous color lines that has separated us since birth
Breathe the aroma of strength, pride and longevity
And most of all your self worth

WWW.XLIBRIS.COM/AZIF BUY IT TODAY!EXCERPTS FROM BOOK IN PROGRESS entitled, AZ IF LAKE ERIE SPEAKS, by SANDRAEL
COPYRIGHT 2007
The two hour observance at the lake included birds flying around the drab rolling grey waters performing an endless show of picturesque flight. They performed only for her. They soared in random circles, soaring free with the sky above them and the lake beneath them. The hundreds of birds appeared to be lit and teasing. The birds were forming some sort of uniformed chain acrobatic acts like highly fueled jet planes. No fuel was necessary, only the scraps that they’d gathered. They flew towards then away. In lieu of the poverty, unemployment, foreclosed homes, killings, kidnappings and drugs there is still serenity in this land.Only the bold or ignorant would dare to step outside of the car at this time of morning at the lake. The cars paraded in and out of the lake parking lot. These people probably did not know what was drawing them to the lake. They wanted to grab that “calming state†that will never leave Lake Erie which has always been the hot blood stream of Cleveland. This lake was so many things to so many people: lover’s lane, pool of sorrow and suicide, refuge, a big thinking cap, grounds for marriage proposal, waters of solitude, children awe in such a sight in the big city, dog’s do do haven, biker’s mile, boater’s sailing away, walkers and runners freedom, fisherman’s walleye haven and a mirage of a skyline for Cleveland, Ohio. This is one of the few places that are still held in high regard as a small piece of heaven. Here is a seemingly unlimited supply of fresh water. The beauty of the lake is not decided by age in numbers as it is for a man. Lake Erie is 400 million years old. This lake deserves so much respect, but is often taken for granted. This lake has produced natural gas, minerals and gravel for construction. The water’s angry or attention getting feats has been said to reach from gravel to top to a level of approximately 250 feet in its lifetime. The end of this lake floats lazily to Teay’s river and in following its glacier drift could end somewhere near the Mississippi river. Create Myspace Hot Wavy Scroller!A handful of people felt invincible and jogged or rode bikes along the water. The cautious folk sat in the safety of their cars. There was even a father and son fishing which was a beautiful sight for a December 31stmorning. Those are the moments children always remember. Those are the memories a parent understands will be eternal.Peaking around tiera’s car was the concrete latrine building that her sisters would pile into as children. It is now closed because of safety, lack of staff to clean or because someone would try to make it their home? In its place stands a single port-a-potty. tiera felt that nothing could happen to her here for she had experienced everything, except die; and she did not feel that this was the day. The wonderment of near 50 degree weather in December made tiera wonder about the previous storms, when a drive to the lake would have been out of the question.
tiera tried not to look to her left. There were all the realities of the big city called progress, such as Tower City and the Rock Hall of Fame. Right in front of her, with the lake as a grim but beautiful back drop, was a sign that said “Danger, Hazardous Area Keep Outâ€. These were the same rocks that she’d climbed onto as a child at the family outings.Looking to the left was the infamous white lighthouse now with a red waistline seeming to be miles and miles away even though only standing at 25 feet tall. This lighthouse is Cleveland East Pierhead Lighthouse in all of its 138 year glory. It was assembled near 1869. Somewhere around this time Gandhi was born in India; the bustle was an undergarment for women; the first Labor Day celebration was held; Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States; black Friday created a financial panic in the U.S. caused by two spectator’s efforts to corner the gold market. This lighthouse, though renovated from wood over many years, still winks its solar powered lens at each ship that passes in the night. Locally, in Ohio, around the time of the creation of this lighthouse the first chewing gum was made; Lakeview Cemetery had just opened; Standard Oil and Sherwin Williams Company was established; Cleveland Public Library was established; Lifesavers candy was created; Cleveland played their first professional baseball game; the first electric streetlight was illuminated and the first streetcar was installed. Through it all this lighthouse stood strong.
The older brother lighthouse in Fairport Harbor was constructed around 1925 at 33 feet high. This is only 45 minutes away. This brother lighthouse was a beacon of hope for many escaped slaves traveling the "Underground railroad". The lighthouse was used for a convenient port for slaves departing for Canada. The slaves were often hidden inside the lighthouse structure awaiting departure. The lighthouse is never lonely out there with God and stands rigid and proud against the most horrible weather. This lighthouse boasts a museum and a two story house. The lighthouse is always alive even thought it has an unnoticed duty to its city. The main pride of this lighthouse is to give off timeless beauty and direction.Earth wind and Fire was playing on tiera’s CD player “See the Light†and tiera sings along with the lyrics:Lookin' through the clouds, what do you see
Sky of gases, child in need
Troubles everywhere, more than I can bear
So I'm searching from within
Help them see the lightI'm a blossom, in the sun, sunshine of love
Singing loud to the one, I love above
Shine on sun, let your light, guide my way
For so long, there's been such darkness
Got to be a better way
Keep me lord, help me to grow.
So I may, reap the fruits, of a free and happy soul
Help them see the lightGive me strength, when temptation calls
Lift me up when life's battles make me fall
Shelter me from the evil and the wrong
So when ya call, dear lord, I said I'll be strongWalk with me, when the stormy nights are cold
In your hand lies all controlMaster, then when my final song is sung
With your mercy, I pray that you'll say well done
Help them see the lighttiera often looked into the eyes of the children of the 2000’s and the emptiness in their eyes come and goes. Their worlds are complicated. Every where is a challenge including the new testing mechanisms for promotion to each grade in school. Imagine being the only child on the block without an Mp3 player or IPod, the costly cable television or a pair of $100 jeans and pullovers, or even the latest video game or cell phone.
Music:
S A N D R A E L
THE OLDER I GET THE MO RAIN
The older I get the mo pain
The older I get the mo thunder outside of the storm
Rains when these children are being born
Rains when the silence is torn
Rains when people have sworn
That they will not lie
Rains when fake people smile
Rains at the sight of a low self-esteemed child
Even for the births that have not been born
Rains for the love that has been worn
Rains for the gifts that have been misused
Rains for the talent that his been diffused
Rains for the love that has been misplaced
Rains for the puzzled look on one’s face
Rains for the previous lives
Rains for that mother’s eyes
Rains for the guns and the drugs
Rains for the fucked up thugs
Rains for the liver that has been shot
Rains for the crack that has been touched
Rains for the knowledge we need so much
Rains for the rehab that did not work
Rains for the innocent child of circumstance
Rains for the God that will please give us a chance
Rains for the family that does not understand
Rains for the community that wont band
Rains for the government that wont bend
Rains for the world that is living in sin
The older I get all I see is rain and pain
Must Jesus bear the cross alone
No, Jesus you are sharing with your own
So who are the real chosen ones
The people that are drenched with rain
Rain cleanses- let it rain
we bear the cross with the chosen One
