...........................................Since her birth in 1984 to parents Karsten and Melanie Johansson, Scarlett has had a self-described "fire in her brain" to act. During her youth, Scarlett's father Karsten (who is of Danish decent) worked as a Manhattan building contractor while her mother Melanie looked after Scarlett and her three siblings. Scarlett's family had no theatrical background, so her early entrance to the industry was almost accidental. A friend of Melanie's, who adored the "cute little Johansson family," suggested Scarlett and her siblings audition for a few commercial and TV roles. Melanie took the kids to an agency to perform a cold reading, but the agents showed interest only in Adrian. It was about what Melanie had expected. What she didn't expect, however, was the reaction of her youngest daughter, Scarlett, who threw a hysterical fit right there in the office. For the first time, Melanie realized how desperately Scarlett wanted to "make it" on TV and in films. After she realized the seriousness of her daughter's commitment to acting, Melanie enrolled her daughter in New York's Lee Strasberg Theater Institute for Young People. At the tender age of eight, Johansson made her acting debut opposite Ethan Hawke in an off-Broadway production of "Sophistry." Her film debut came shortly after when she scored a supporting role in Rob Reiner's comedy "North" (1994). Following her debut, Johansson went on to act in "Just Cause" (1995) and "If Lucy Fell" (1996) until she stumbled upon her breakout film role as a restless foster child in "Manny and Lo" (1996). Johansson's portrayal of wild yet sage Manny attracted the attention of important members of the industry and garnered her an Independent Spirit nomination. Scarlett's acting career continued steadily after the success of "Manny and Lo" and in 1998 she scored the part of Grace Maclean in Robert Redford's adaptation of "The Horse Whisperer" when Natalie Portman was unable to take the role. This role afforded Johansson the opportunity to work with acting legend Robert Redford and earned her a nomination for a Young Artist Award. Her work with with seasoned actors such as Sean Connery, Robert Redford and Billy Bob Thornton at a young age gave Scarlett the experience that set her apart from her acting peers. And unlike most other child actors Scarlett's childhood acting career has parlayed into an equally successful career as an adult. In recent years Johansson has starred in such critically acclaimed films as Sofia Coppola's brilliant "Lost in Translation" and "The Girl With the Pearl Earring".It doesn't look like she's going to slow down any time soon. In 2005 Johansson is slated to star in an adaptation of James Elroy's novel "The Black Dahlia," which tells the fictional account of the 1947 murder of Hollywood actress Elizabeth Short.

My Interests

Quotes On her passion for action... When I was three, I used to tell my Mom I had a fire in my brain to act.On her distinctive voice... I'm so tired of hearing casting directors ask if I have a sore throat. The people who have told me that my voice is distinctive, it's unusual ... those people have always been close to my heart. On her elders... With people my age, there's not much respect for elders. But I'd like to think I'm not like that. It's so interesting to listen to what older people have to say. Your grandparents, your parents, it really affects the way you look at things. On fame... Whatever you do, don't go into acting for the fame, 'cause you're gonna end up unhappy. And I don't really think you can become an actress ... you are an actressOn signing a recent deal with Calvin Klein... Just when I thought things couldn't get better, something like this happens. On Aging... Men age like wine, and women seem to wilt in the eyes of an audience. On films... I love when I see a movie and it's like you're not even in the theater, but you're right there with the characters, in their world, and going through the experience with them. That's what I hope to take away when I watch a movie, and I hope that's what people experience when they see a film - any film - I'm in.On her maturity... I'm the kind of person that doesn't put up with bullshit. Does that make me uncommonly mature? I don't know. I think you mature with experiences, and how other people view you and your maturity really depends upon when you have those experiences. If you have them at the age of 13, you're gonna seem really mature, and if they happen when you're 75, you're gonna seem immature. I think I was born with a great awareness of my surroundings and an awareness of other people. On Britney Spears... I'm actually not that type of music listener, Britney Spears type culture thing but I was telling someone earlier that it's not like I don't know the words to "Hit Me Baby One More Time," I think we all do because there are such few words. I don't have anything against it, if that's what you choose to listen to and be a part of, then so be it.On the importance of appearance... I think that I sort of see other actresses are kind of proud of the way they look and show it off. That's never really been my style. I really don't think that it's disgusting or wrong, if you're 18 you're 18, it's your body, it's your right to show yourself, however, I don't really take a part in that. I like to look nice, but I think that there's ways of doing it that are more tasteful than just wearing a bikini wherever you go.
