The Legacy Of Chairman Fred Hampton Sr.What is the Prisoners of Conscience Committee? "We are not a prison activist organization. We are a revolutionary organization." -Fred Hampton, Jr.The Prisoners of Conscience Committee was founded by Fred Hampton, Jr. during the nine years he spent in Concentration Camps in the 1990's. Fred Hampton Jr. is the son of Fred Hampton Sr., Deputy Chairman of the Chicago Chapter of the Black Panther Party. Fred Hampton Sr. had the charisma to excite crowds during rallies, he was suppose to be appointed to the Party's Central Committee. His position would have been Chief of Staff if he did not have an untimely death/assasination on the evening of December 4, 1969.In the words of Chairman Fred, Jr: "The POCC was literally birthed from behind enemy lines, its birth canal was the concentration camps, its umbilical cords are the prison chains." Now an international organization, the P.O.C.C engages in revolutionary work throughout the country, both through their own programs and through coalition building with other revolutionary peoples and organizations.P.O.C.C. CAMPAIGNSThe Ballot“African Anti Terrorism Bill (AAT Bill)” The campaign for the Anti African Terrorism (AAT) Bill addresses the phenomenon of terrorism from the viewpoint of the O.V.’s: the Original Victims of terrorism, and that means African people. Descendants of Africa have been subjected to terrorism under such euphemisms as slavery, Jim Crow segregation, red lining, gentrification, etc. We’re putting these in their correct context. The African Anti-Terrorism Bill was created in direct response to the passing of Patriot Acts I, II, and III. The AAT Bill explains the POCC's positions on what they see as the most pressing issues of terrorism facing communities of 'African' people, including: "Police Terrorism, Just-Us System, Concentration Camps (U.S. prisons), Land Grab, Mis-Education and Chemical and Biological Warfare on African and colonized People. The POCC is pushing the AAT Bill forward in an effort to hold politicians and community leaders accountable in relation to the oppressed communities of 'African' descent. If you would like to Sponsor this event or would like this event at your University please contact me for booking, a Sponsorship Package. Building Communities and Families (BCF)Maniac Bey representative of BCF speaks at Gang intervention conferences, high schools, community programs, universities, and prisions as mentor to inmates in the system. The spirit of the Black Panther Party's Legacy is to win the hearts of the people through Programs that uplift them and help unite the people with issues we have in common.

What is BCF?BCF is an acronym that stands for Building Communities and Families. BCF is a community based non profit corporation that was founded in southern California in the early 1990’s. The primary goal in our mission statement is the ‘uplifting of fallen humanity’. It is clear that the basis/root of humanity is the family structure. If the family structure is sound and stable, then the society will be the same, but if it is dysfunctional and counter productive, then the society will also reflect these attributes. For youth-at-risk, due to their lack of knowledge and control over the institutions in their community, the social conditions that surround them have a profound impact on how they develop. This is exemplified in the African American community, where we find a family and communal structure that is so broken down and dysfunctional that they are often at the bottom of every negative social statistic imaginable. Many African Americans have families and friends who are what society labels ‘thugs’, ‘gangsters’, ‘delinquents’, ‘dope dealers’ and ‘drug users’, ‘ex-con’s’, etc. We cannot merely accept the typical law enforcement approach to crime because these are our families and friends lives. We reject the solution of simply locking them up and throwing away the key. We must find a solution that focuses on healing and not punishment because the youth are a product of their environment.BCF Action ProgramsThe main method BCF employs to make positive change in the community is through education. We feel that to change behaviors we must first change attitudes. Attitudes are changed by offering new information that influences the mentality of people. Although we specialize in youth at risk issues like gang intervention, we also perform many other services to help repair African American families in particular and our communities as a whole. BCF has a very flexible approach and can work in community, school, and prison environments. We have worked with pre-teens, teenagers, young adults and even elderly. Some of the services and programs BCF offers are:Personal Development: We begin our program by building character & life management skills. Community Arts Program: Through our link with Pan African Art we offer a vast array of art training. Minority Youth League: We train and mentor youth in a vast array of sports activities. African/Asiatic Studies Program: We increase personal dignity and self respect by increasing historical relevance of African and Asiatic people and civilizations. Civic Lessons: We teach political Education and Empowerment. Tutoring Program: Includes math, reading, and computer literacy. Financial Management: Lack of financial management is one of the greatest threats to the future of African American youth. Free Maintenance and Vocational Training Program: We give free home maintenance while simultaneously offering free vocational training. Community and Prison outreach: We involve the youth in helping improve their community and serving others."words are beautiful, but action is supreme" E. Leah Chappell "Bruce Leah", Freelance Visual Artist

Leah Chappell was born in Spokane, Washington, in 1979. When she was 8, the family returned to California to stay, settling in Oakland. Leah’s artistic talent and political awareness were nurtured and guided by her mom and her sisters, all of whom are artists and musicians as well. Her extended family, which is extremely multicultural, provided a rich background from which she was able to draw inspiration. The cultural and political heritage of Oakland, as personified by the Black Panther Party and Tony Toni Tone has also been a powerful influence in Leah’s artistic life. Leah’s younger brother (who is also an artist and musician), introduced her to the music of Bob Marley several years ago. The lyrics, the music and the spiritual power changed her life. His level of consciousness affected her deeply, and she began to express how the music impacted her in portraits of Bob. She continues to paint and draw those who she has found to be instrumental in her growth as an artist and a person, including Marvin Gaye, The Buddha and members of her family.

Black Music Month Show Some Respect Girl The ladies of Louisville's hip-hop scene struggle for respect.

Revolutionary, but sexy The ladies of the hip-hop soul duo Queendom Come present music that is unapologetically feminine and often pen lyrics meant to empower and celebrate women. But these women, who describe their music as "edutaining propaganda," are definitely not sex kittens. Queendom Come is made up of Afrykah, born Daphnie Ezell who now lives in Louisville, and Naima J., who is based in Baltimore. They say they are on a mission to save the minds of black youths and help bring down the social structures that maintain inequality and mental bondage. The duo has been traveling coast to coast spreading their message through rap, song and spoken word. Along the way, however, they've often faced men in positions of power looking to test their limits. "They're going to test you to see if they can sleep with you," Afrykah said. "They are going to do suggestive things just to see where you are as a woman, to see if that's your way of getting into the business." Afrykah said Queendom Come was criticized by the conscious hip-hop community for titling their recently released mixtape "Revolutionary But Sexy." "They felt as if we were exploiting the movement," she said. "But at the end of the day it's about tapping into who you are as a woman. I think that sexy is just a space of confidence." For a woman to survive in the music business, she must find balance, Afrykah said. "Eve, surprisingly, is probably one of the few people in the business right now who I feel like is a balanced woman," she said. "When she came in, there was a little roughness to her. But I think she's really come into her space, and I love that about her. Even though she's not the most conscious, she doesn't spend all of her time talking about clothes and shoes."

Dennis Dortch Photo byNuma Perrier.
With a distinctive style and provocative material, up and coming writer/director Dennis Dortch, is a creative creature by nature. Born in the suburbs of Philly, Mr. Dortch is a love child of the Pre-Neo-Soul-Bohemian movement coming out of the city in the 1970s. The Philly Sound tainted his young mind with images of Black Love mixed with socio-political messages. Graduating from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film Production, Mr. Dortch cut his professional teeth writing for the token black character on the first episodic website “The Spot.” His directorial debut, Honey, a dreamy experimental short set in the blaxploitation era, was an official selection at the 1999 Slamdance Film Festival. In 2001, deconstructing the notion that white women are the standard of beauty, he followed up with The White Girl Theme, premiering at Slamdance again the same year. Mr. Dortch’s latest project, Dortch’s latest project, is a stylistic, music-driven film that deconstructs black love and sexuality through five progressive vignettes unfolding in a day. A Good Day to be Black &Sexy is a stylistic, music-driven feature film that deconstructs black love and sexuality through five progressive vignettes unfolding in a single day. His most ambitious project to date, Mr. Dortch continues to attract raw talent as he dreams up new ideas.Like Spike Lee, Gordon Parks, Jr., Melvin Van Peebles, and the Hughes Brothers before him, Mr. Dortch is part of the next generation of innovative African-American filmmakers.
Hailing from the rugged streets of the South Bronx, Division X has been one of the budding success stories of the New York independent Hip Hop scene. Formed in November of 2001, Division X quickly molded their individual talent into a distinctive high energy affair. Proudly emphasizing an original in your face sound, and a thought provoking rap edge, this three man group consists of lyricists North Star, Mad Dog, and turntablist DR. Dust. With their descriptive, "heart of the Bronx lyrics" and self produced "attack track" soundscapes, Division X is clear on what their music represents. "We make music for the underdog, says North Star. Our music is very hard, and that's because of our surroundings. Simply put, Division X tracks are loud, cannon blast music. We make hard ass beats, and hard ass rhymes, for some hard ass times." a href="http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/ebey12/113345816 3_m.jpg" target="_blank"%
