*U*P*S* (Undaground Pimp Squaddd) went public in March of 2006, but has existed long before. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, founder Megale Anthony (K-Da5h-B) toyed with the idea of doing music. Serving as a means to escape the harsh realities that flooded the streets of his hometown Pittsburgh, PA. Anthony spent his spare time free style rapping, writing and recording songs.
A series of events between friends and colleagues led the 23-year-old emcee to distance himself from the idea of doing serious music. Over the years music still remained the premiere outlet of expression for him and those he surrounded himself with. Although a major label deal and a career in the industry no longer held any luster in his mind, he continued to hone his craft. While examining the local hip-hop scene Anthony noticed a void. In his mind there was a lack of originality and creativity, leading him to reconnect with the notion of turning his music into a career path.
Enter U*P*S*. Composed of Megale Anthony (K-Da5h-B), Jon Hughes (Clark Kent), Brian Tolbert (B Mole), Dre Jones (Driz), Thomas Agnew (Blackout) and backed by the likes of JENESIS Magazine and On A Key Records *U*P*S* has the power to make real waves on the Pittsburgh scene. 2006 served as a breakout year for the group, but 2007 is slated to catapult the collective into the upper echelon of Pittsburgh’s hip-hop elite.
Surprising to some *U*P*S* is not only a rap group but rather a consortium, Anthony explains “*U*P*S* isn’t just music. There is a promotional team, a business staff and people who just love to have fun.†With a lyrical style that acts as a visual gateway for listeners, K-Da5h-B takes his audience on vivid journeys through a wide range of topics. Adding more versatility is the equally talented Jon Hughes (Clark Kent). Kent who is no stranger to the pressures of success, holds his place as a strong link in the *U*P*S* chain of command. Looking to build off of the advertising pre-hype on such Internet hotspots as myspace.com and facebook.com *U*P*S* is gearing up to release it’s much anticipated “These Hills Have Eyes: The Mixtape†in the early quarter of 07’.
Although the group has it’s eyes set on reaching the top of Pittsburgh don’t limit yourself to thinking the *U*P*S* sphere of influence stops at the Steel City. In August 2006 the group began working with Detroit rappers Dwayne (Oppisit) and Ronnie (Mitch) Alexander of DMB Productions. Oppisit, who not only lends his vocals in the booth, is also responsible for the bulk of the production on the mixtape. Armed with the talent of platinum artists, the hunger of underground artists, and direction of industry veterans don’t be surprised if in 2007 *U*P*S* has you asking, “Whut Kan U Do 4 Me?â€
