About Me

The Cahaba River Society was founded in 1988 to meet the growing needs for protection of the river and its tributaries, and has grown to become the largest watershed protection organization in Alabama. The mission of the Cahaba River Society is to restore and protect the Cahaba River watershed and its rich diversity of life. This diversity includes not only the river's nationally-significant aquatic life, but also the diverse people of central Alabama who rely on the Cahaba for clean, low-cost drinking water. The Cahaba has more species of fish per mile than any other river in North America. We emphasize education and consensus building among all interests. Combining expertise in the science of river ecosystems with a practical understanding of the forces of urban growth and development, we build partnerships to increase the resources brought to bear on river problems. And we encourage people to take responsibility for the environment in their own backyard.I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V4.4 (www.strikefile.com/myspace)
We aim for a Cahaba River that is healthy and clean for all life that depends on it, like this ... (first photo)... not polluted like this (second photo). This is mud runoff from poorly controlled construction sites after a normal summer thunderstorm on 7-29-07. Both pics were taken from the Grants Mill Road bridge looking downstream. There is a canoe launch and walking trail at this beautiful location. Help CRS clean up the Cahaba!

I'd like to meet:

citizens and leaders who envision a healthy region with well-planned and quality growth that takes advantage of our natural beauty and conserves our water resources for future generations.

CRS News!Dear Cahaba friends,
CRS is very proud to announce that our wonderful volunteer with the OSM/Vista Americorps program, Elizabeth Salter, is the new Watershed Organizer for the Alabama Rivers Alliance. ARA and CRS have figured how to share Liz during this transition. Liz was the third of 3 Vista's working with CRS in our initiative to promote ecotourism in Bibb County to capitalize on the Cahaba National Wildlife Refuge and Blocton Coke Ovens, and to find/remediate acid mine drainage sources. She is a dynamic, savvy community organizer with a deep environmental commitment, and we should all be very glad that the magic she's brought to Bibb County will be spread throughout the state! Click here to see what Liz has to say about this exciting transition!

People of CRS!

We at CRS wish to use our Myspace page not only to make those interested aware of what is currently in the works at CRS, but also to build relationships with those battling next to us for the preservation as well as the betterment of the natural world around us. The fellow to the right is Hunter Nichols. Hunter is a photograher working alongside the Cahaba River Society as well.
