------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------"Jiva" is a Sanskrit word for soul. It also embodies the musical ideal of Jiva Train: music that comes from the soul. Their compositional approach to music is rare in our current age of mainstream entertainment. Every song they write is intentional and thoughtfully composed. In its fundamental form, their music stems from a refreshing mixture of Rock, Latin, Funk, and Classical. They create vocal harmonies and lyrics that stick in your head, like Ween, and The Flaming Lips. They write instrumentals that bridge the enormous gap between Rock and Classical, a path once beaten by Phish. They find a pocket and groove as one funky unit, like Medeski, Martin and Wood. The instrumentation is unusual for a rock band; featuring Satyen Thaker (Guitar/Vocals), Kevin Reitz (Drums/Vocals), and Derek Turner (Keyboards/Vocals). This trio has come together for the pure love of making music, and the energy created from their music is a true testament to that. Jiva Train enjoys the spontaneity and freshness of improvisation, but songwriting/composing will always be a core value.Satyen Thaker, the songwriter/composer and guitarist for Jiva Train, is a graduate of the University of Colorado Music School at Boulder, receiving a BA in Music. Derek Turner (Keyboards), and Kevin Reitz (Drums) all have performed in numerous bands prior to Jiva Train, and all have had extensive live experience.------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- Jiva Train EP -Shattering the Trance Jam Label, posted by Trip Meadows on 06/23/2007- www.coloradojamscene.com.Once I heard the first notes sound after putting this CD in my player I knew I was in for a good time. The new EP released by Boulder based Jiva Train is truly a pleasure to listen to. Having reviewed their material before, I knew what to expect….or I thought I knew anyhow. The material on display on this new EP exceeded expectations and shattered any assumptions. The diversity of the music is obviously due to the integration of various influences. Having morphed from a quartet to a trio has not hindered Jiva Train’s sound. This EP will help this band break out of those pesky Trance Jam labels. These guys know how to play, these guys know how to compose…these songs are good. In fact this EP features some very fine guitar and keyboard work.I was pleasantly surprised by the vocal harmonies in “Future City†and “The Space†in fact a little impressed. A jam band that can sing….stop the presses! Vocals not being a strong suit in previous releases, it seems that they’ve taken some lessons. The instrumentation featured in “Don Coyote†is wonderful. No lyrics on this track, but the music will tell a story no doubt. It’s conjures up images of attending a bizarro carnival and riding the music roller coaster. The trippy sounds of the keys really help to form these mental images and physical sensations. The composition of this song features intricate progressions and contrasting sounds. The song writing is very intellectual and displays a much more mature sound than previous releases featured. Yet it’s still very fun all at the same time. The complexity and structure of guitar work in “Pesto Allegro†reminds me of Phish. I hate making comparisons like that. Being that I’m a huge Phish fan I don’t toss these comparisons out very often. Satyen is one heck of a guitarist. But when I close my eyes I hear a little bit of Trey in Satyen’s work. This is a very fine jam.A nifty twist to Jiva Train’s EP is the final song titled “Legend of Zelda Medley†This cover of Nintendo’s most well-respected video game composers’ Koji Kondo is fun and meshes well with the band’s trance jam roots. It’s almost like I’ve got my old Nintendo out and I’m on level one.Excellent production value, I must say. I like to point it out because it’s so important for a good review. I see that the band used Global Sound to mix and master the new EP. Way to keep it local boys! They did a great job for ya.Jiva is the Sanskrit word for soul and this music certainly comes from the soul. This new EP is creative, fun, complex and will conjure up some memory or image or sensation in your brain…I guarantee.-------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- Jiva Train - written by Kathryn Moore, www.northeastintune.com: Music from the soul, and tickles the soul, is what the members of Jiva Train say about their music. What better music could you ask for? Someone that pours their feelings and experiences into their music defiantly has their heart in the right place, and Jiva Train is the perfect example...Although some songs you could sleep to, some make you want to get up and dance. The best way that I can describe Satyens voice is to say that it has the same effect on me that Maynard Keenans does; just hearing it instantly makes me relax. Couple the calming vocals with the masterful instrumentals and in the end you get songs that not only tell stories with words, but with instruments as well and you can feel all the emotions they produce. Their song Pesto Allegro practically tells a complete story even though there are no vocals what so ever. Mixing genres like Rock, Latin, Funk, and Classical make their set flexible. Theres a style in their music for almost anyone...If their stage presence is as powerful as their songs are, I can bet it would be a good show for any age.-------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------Trance Castle - written by www.rockoncolorado.com: " ’Oh, no!’ we thought, ’Trance music. That’s gonna suck.’ However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Trance Castle, was not as boring or monotonous as expected. In fact, we were even entertained and found Jiva Train’s approach refreshing. The sparse vocals, are not a bad thing...There is some excellent guitar-work throughout and some creative extras on ’Cosmic Things.’ The cool piano work shines on ’Latin Love.’ Trance Castle took us on a pleasant journey instead of the expected endlessly boring trip in a psychedelic-painted-school-bus driving to nowhere. Buy this CD for a change of pace."------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------Trance Castle - written by Jesse Jarnow, www.jambands.com: "Jiva Train is the product of lead guitarist Satyen Thaker. There is no shortage of his instrument on Trance Castle...The 10-minute disc-closing ’Clowns’ isn’t a bad approximation of Junta-era Anastasio’s soaring pans over the Vermont countryside, and must be as fun to perform as it was to write...great ride."
