Two demo EPs have been released this year, a boxed set is being conceived and we're preparing an official release on SpiritSpiderS Entertainment for 2008.
:::Legend:
According to a Lakota legend, it were spiritspiders who wove the world and the human mind; connecting everything, the here and there, the now and then, sun and stars, the mice and men with strands of light. The same legend says, that their work is far from done. SpiritSpiderS are still working to improve the weave, that we call reality.
:::Mission Statement:
The SpiritSpiderS are intended to be a band and multimedia project that spans across the classic boundaries of entertainment. It's not supposed to be just a rock/metal/techno band or just a website with weird songs. It's supposed to be a mind-blowing project, that processes its manifold influences into something new. It's not only about music, but about the visuals, the internet and a deep story behind the songs. It's about playing great concerts, opening minds, rising spirits and maybe saving a life or two.
:::History:
The band was never a band. From the beginning, it was just Frank and his machinery. In the summer of 2000, Frank invested the money he made during his social year into some home-recording equipment. At that point there were only some loops and rough ideas, intended to be blended into the electro project Boilertubes, which had been around as a loose idea since 1998. In 2001 Frank bought a guitar and began teaching himself some chords. Soon his way of making music changed. Instead of writing some lyrics here and making a beat there, he began creating coherent songs, that followed the trail of his childhood heroes Queen, Bad Religion, the Smashing Pumpkins or the Beatles. The name Boilertubes didn't feel right anymore. The project was renamed after the inspiration for the songs - the SpiritSpiderS.
In 2003 a demo containing 11 early songs was released through the website www.spiritspiders.com and the quest for a liveband began. Those early line-ups never lasted long. It sounds so easy in all the bands' bios, but bands form through flukes and chance. You have to share a vision, have compatible musical skills and interests and get along as human beings. For the SpiritSpiderS it was even harder, because there was already a catalogue of songs, a vision, ideas for image, musical style and performance. A problem that would continue to haunt this ship's captain for the next three years.
In 2004 a couple of new and old songs added up to become the demo "Unauthorized Copy" which Frank sent out to a bunch of labels. While none of them wanted to waste any money on a band that couldn't play live, the song "Dear Virus" was picked for a compilation and sparked some interest. It gave the project some early press and public exposure.
4 years of playing around with the buttons finally paid out when Frank began recording "Juno" the SpiritSpiderS' 2005 demo release. Lacking the messy sound and production flaws of previous demos and featuring 4 of the better songs and improved musical delivery, Juno really opened the gates to the world. It still fell short of Frank's expectations, but it was a milestone, that most people even considered to be of radio quality.

The 4 songs received good and bad criticism and got airplay on internet radio stations and countless band profiles, but a band doesn't exist, if it can't play live. How can you transfer that special brew onto a stage? How can you transform those songs back into energy?
In 2006 the SpiritSpiderS left their internet eremitage for the first time: Following the invitation of Rich Brookes and inspired by Benjamin Ezra , Frank played two singer-songwriter gigs in York and Malton, debuting the SpiritSpiderS as a live-act. The songs weren't necessarily the "best of", but songs that easily worked in the acoustic situation and they did not miss their aim. The crowd cheered and asked for more; the newspapers and radiostations got interested in the project as well.
Over the course of 2006 a full line-up got together. One bass player short of a rock band, the boys took the songs of Juno, Dear Virus and a composition of the line-up's keyboarder Aeneas V. called "What you really expected" and turned them into live-versions to rock the stage at Drizzledorf's People Club Bar. While it was a fun gig, the musical quality did not quite match everybody's expectations. The lineup was disbanded shortly after the gig and there won't be another attempt to form a rock band.
The Mercury EP, released in February marked the beginning of busy activities in 2007. Together with the Kyles ' mastermind Mycha Schekalla on guitar, the SpiritSpiderS played two well received sets in the rhineland area, received further booking on both nights and made new friends. While the bands' suitcases are packed for Groningen and Vienna, another demo EP is rising into its place on the pantheon. Apollo was released in September and featuring 6 new tracks in increased quality. While it was first planned to focus on the project's acoustic side, it was later decided to show the different aspects of the band - acoustic, electronic and rock. Instead, Apollo mutated into a dirty rock record, that leaves little air to breathe. For the first time, a SpiritSpiderS EP features music NOT recorded in Frank's bedroom: No less than two tracks feature live drums recorded at the blubox-studio in Troisdorf. After some rejuvenation, recording for the upcoming official release JUPITER RISING will begin.
to be continued...

The old demo was stuck in my deck for over a year, only to be replaced by his latest masterstroke. Great songwriter, doing everything from outstanding sing-alongs to mind-screwing instrumentals.

Very talented singer/songwriter from Malton, North Yorkshire. He's the one who tricked me into playing my first gig as a one-man-act. Beautiful songs wait on his profile.
Amy Blue

Band Members: Hands, feet, a bunch of fingers and some toes, too...
Influences: The list of bands, that have inspired me to do what I do could easily take away all of the internet's available space, but here go the most important ones:
Songwriting:
the Beatles, Billy Corgan, Kula Shaker, John Frusciante, Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Bad Religion, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Green Day, Queen, Josh Homme and probably many others. Since I cannot screen myself from radio and TV pollution I'd also have to mention the countless one hit wonders and good songwriters from any genre, that ever made it to my ears.
Sound:
Kula Shaker, NIN, the Beatles, Pendikel, Queen, the Smashing Pumpkins, recording at the Blubox, George Martin, David Arnold, John Williams, Don Davis, QOTSA, Kris Ellestad/Kessler Tidal, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Beck, Pink Floyd, the Doors, early 90s techno and rave music, especially the Prodigy's first album. I'm not the most gifted guitar player, so I guess I just take what I can grasp with two hands.
Beats:
Jimmy Chamberlin, NIN, the Prodigy, System of a Down, urban music - especially drum'n'bass and hip hop.
Singing:
Freddie Mercury, Trent Reznor, Crispian Mills, Chris Cornell.
Selling "it":
Marilyn Manson, Moby, Eminem, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd and a bunch of other bands, that I shoudn't name, because everything except their talent to sell themselves sucks!
Seeing Trent Reznor and Dave Grohl lead one-man-armies to success was also a great encouragement to carry on without a group of devoted musicians behind me.
Thank you.
As you will hear, I do not try to put all those influences in a blender and push the button. I think a good songwriter takes all his influences, sounds like none, somehow reminds you of all of them but definitely has a flavour of his own.
Sounds Like: It's hand- and homemade music. 2-3 guitar tracks meet a bassline and dance over electronic rock beats. (Can't afford recording real drums in decent quality) Usually one lead voice is backed by one or two backing and/or harmony vocal tracks. The spaced out synth sounds of an Access Virus b add up to the signature sound of the "band".
During Unauthorized Copy I experimented a lot. The Juno material has a very steady modern electrorock sound to it, with a real bass guitar as well as better amplification and mixing devices being the most audible advances in quality and musical delivery.
I am happy to look back at a successful 2007: The Pantheon series was continued by the Mercury demo. 8 brand new songs, each a huge leap ahead of everything you previously heard from Camp Spider. A lot more diversified than Juno, yet not as unfocussed as Unauthorized Copy. But there was still more to come: Apollo took his place in the ether to release another volley of songs, that dwelt on metal, acoustic and electronic influences. Rising out of the swamp of drone, that had engulfed most of Mercury, reaching out to fulfil industry standards, failing them miserably, but marking another step ahead. Some songs come in the traditional SpiritSpiderS electronic rock sound, others riding on pounding live drums, courtesy of Guido Lucas . To wrap things up nicely, both demos will also be released as a press package consisting of the 2 CDs and a mind-blowing booklet, once again designed by the amazing Jay Leroy, who has already carved the faces of Juno, Mercury and Apollo.
