About Me
WHY I CREATED MUZIC THEORY:
I get this question all the time from people in the industry, artists, press folks, etc. I didn't start The Theory to make money. ALOT of hard work goes into each event and I dont need the money that bad anyway. I didn't do it to push an artist that i'm managing or consulting. I did it for one reason and one reason only...
The Music.
Since the Black Lily ended in 2001, there have been a few decent showcases, but nothing that ever provided the same vibe. See, Black Lily was an event that was presented by The Roots and took place every week at a spot on Hudson Street called The Wetlands which, sadly, is now a furniture store.
Every Sunday night, a bunch of relatively unknown acts would get together with an incredible band and do what they did best...entertain. I remember the very first event that happened in 99....and the crowd was terrible. I’m talking like, I literally could have bought everybody in the place a drink with a 50 dollar bill and still had change… it was pitiful.
But I believed in it, and so did my friends. I started consistently speaking with some of the artists every week, eventually exchanging contact info, and before I knew it...I was walking around the village with flyers 3 or 4 days a week, hitting every relevant place I could think of until about 4am...and before long the Lily became the hottest weekend event. I mean this thing started at like 10pm on a Sunday night, and it was PACKED! You couldn’t move in there!
On any given week, we'd have Jill Scott, Macy Gray, Common, Erykah Badu, Mos Def... you name it. It was THE place to be. No Door drama, no club beef, or BS. It was just people man. It was beautiful.
But since the Lily ended, there's just been a void that nobody has ever been able to fill since…
Until Now.
I'm talking original music, great performers, and amazing musicianship. That’s the only way. Leave the background dancers at home, because this isn’t a dancing contest or a shuck n' jive show. This is about the MUZIC. That’s why I called it Muzic Theory...because I have a Theory that if you put incredible artists on stage with incredible musicianship to support those artists, and you allow the crowd to interact and become part of that...you will make magic, and that magic will propel careers that just don’t have the outlet that they should in the music industry right now.
Artists have to make their own fate...and I plan I can help them, God willing.
So far, we've featured Deemi, Chrisette Michele, Jaguar Wright, Amanda Diva, Heavy, TL Cross, Peter Hadar, Joy Denalane, Jaiden & Franklin Bridge, just to name a few! And over the coming months, not only will we be bringing BACK some of those artists, but bringing some of the best talent on the scene today that you may or may not have heard of…artists from all over the spectrum, from R&B to Rock, to Rap.
Muzic Theory is a labor of love. And for everyone who's participated (especially those of us who've seen it grow since day one), they've seen the growth in this movement and can appreciate exactly what it’s all about.
I just hope more of you will join in as we take it across the country...and to Europe very soon.
I'll do all the work. I'll build the vehicle.
All you have to do is show up, and enjoy the ride.
Respect,
Matthew Maysonet
