Even Worse

The original and still the worst

About Me

"Even Worse, a name indicative of punk's tendency towards self-deprecation. While the standard rock & pop artists were all too busy cultivating an image of being too cool and glamorous, a whole army of malcontent groups were busy screaming 'I'm fucked up and the world is too'. Formed by raw, gut-level music fanaticsm EW's goal, like many others at the time, was to bring back the idea of music as a means towards real spontaneous excitement, rather than a planned, non-interactive event of uneventful malaise... a much-needed kick in the groin to a stale music hierarchy."

"To punk aficionados of a certain age, the name Even Worse conjures memories of a time when New York punk was forced underground by a mainstream media that overexposed its every twitch until it became the 70's version of Haight Ashbury. After labels lured the big names away with corporate booty in extremis, New York's scene distilled into a volatile melange of reconstituted punk glory...
This is raw, ragged and gloriously cheap music played with the emotional volume of the Stooges and Pistols and the chaotic speed of roofing nails in a blender. Even Worse front woman R.B. Korbet was one of the few true female punks... this is the real New York rock."

Emptying The Madhouse, Peppermint Lounge NYC 1982

rb says:
"I remember this night so well after watching the vid... the stage was so high, it felt really weird looking down at all our friends and I was quite self-conscious, hence my drunkenness. These are the bogus 'new romantic' lyrics I wrote to take the piss (which is also the version that made it onto the New York Thrash comp, to my chagrin). The real lyrics are about the fake fashion punks on St Marks place that we used to harass, that version made it onto "You've Ruined Everything" which Jerry Williams produced at 171A.

The inspiration for the title of the song was from Bobby's (guitarist) dad, referring to his odd-looking friends congregating in his bedroom and then dispersing. Bobby will correct me if I am wrong about that. Bobby's dad once bailed us out of jail during an excursion to Summit, NJ after the infamous 'bank job'.

Anyway, enjoy the vid. You can tell I felt rather awkward up there, and my New York accent was quite heavy at the time, it's really funny to hear. My favorite bit is towards the end when I forget to sing into the mic (I blame beer).

Peace!"
