Mike G comes from a handful of people that have held down techno in Minneapolis since there was techno in Minneapolis. In a sea of DJs with few locations to perform he has managed to remain a staple for years being something others are not.
Mike pushes his performance through technology and constantly looks for innovative ways to replace remedial mixing methods. If you give him the same track listing to play, the result would be drastically different every time. Early on it was three decks, doubles, external effects processors, looping devices. With the inclusion of computers it’s hair trigger looping and effects, filters, sends/returns, mashups, controllers, spur of the moment builds ups or break downs, all tools that keep it new and unique.
First performing in 97' at one off events and a few club nights, Mike quickly drew attention of the long standing locals. 1999 he took to the production group “Intellephunk†headed up by long time scene supporter and fellow DJ, Steve “Centrificâ€. The group went on to produce and contribute to some of the best techno events ever held in Mpls, hosting headliners such as Richie Hawtin, Woody Mcbride, Cari Lekebusch, Mark EG, Thomas Krome, Marc Houle, Troy Pierce, Magda, Matthew Dear, Mark Farina, The Kooky Scientist, Gaetano Parisio, Marco Carola, Patrick Skoog, Adam Jay, Bryan Zentz, Derek Plaslaiko, Joel Mull, Michael Mayer, Misjah, Stewart Walker, Surgeon, Slip, Marc Verbos, Slobodan, Dave Angel, James Holden, Marc Broom, Hyperactive, The Drop Bass Network, supporting a good portion of the Minneapolis locals, and more. Intellephunk also contributed to the legendary Futhur events and even several Hawtin/M-nus events in Detroit.
His sets have been seen throughout the Midwest. Mike was highlighted in the electronic music magazine "Mixer" after an appearance at a Chicago event in April of 2002.
In the summer of 05 a project was started named Klik Musik. The idea behind the project was to expand the ideas of advanced performances and showcase the best and the brightest in Minneapolis. Through a series of monthly events, the artists involved produced some cutting edge performances that pushed methods for Mike and others. After a year, the Klik Musik project went back into development and will return at a later date.
Mike can usually be found playing at (or in audience) the newly infamous Foundation, The Dinkytowner, or Fahrenheit in Minneapolis these days. Regardless whatever he decides to play, you can always rely on it being new and inspiring. Don't ever expect to be bored when you're listening to Mike G.
