Smashed guitars! Bleeding eardrums! Backstage fist fights! No understanding of how to tune an instrument! Flannel shirts! More bass players than a funk convention! Sonic mayhem! 1,000 watt amplifiers! Bad attitude! Pure magic! This is MALL SECURITY.
Mall Security formed on the playground of Sacred Heart Elementary School in Saratoga, California in the Fall of 1993. Originally called Indian Burn, the band featured Matt Security on drums, Speckman on bass, and Alex Security on guitar and vocals. After their first show (the 1994 Saratoga Music Fest at Wildwood Park), Speckman left the band, and Josh "Quigs" Quigley (and his feral afro) entered on bass. In 1995, the band officially changed its name to Mall Security. Over the years, the band had trouble keeping a steady bass player, mostly because whoever got stuck with playing bass would find something better to do with their time. The laundry list of bass players also includes Frangie, Dustin Cantrell, and Monster Pete -- who was kicked out for being drunk. Big mistake on our part.
Mall Security had the privilege of sharing the stage with such illustrious bands as: Monster Pete and the Chiefs, Monkey, Slow Gherkin, Xiu Xiu, Little Tin Frog, the Muckruckers, the Siren Six!, the Wunder Years, Negative Star, Blindspot, the rX Bandits, the Jamons, and of course, our personal favorites: The Huxtables. There were a bunch of other bands we played with too, but we don't like them nearly as much as these bands. Our genre was Second Wave Neo-Grunge, which sounds like like a mash-up of Pacific Northwest Sludge and Two-Tone Ska.
Our manager was The Grand Fanali, and we would like to thank him for everything he did for us. He often booked us the prime time slot of opening shows at 6 pm, even though doors opened at 7. We would also like to thank our muse, Kayvon Siadat, who attended most of our gigs. After our set, Kayvon was always the first one to tell us we totally sucked, and we thank him for that. Also, we would like to thank our fan club, The Security Force. All 28 of you. And for some bizarre reason, 19 of you are from Rohnert Park, California. We've never even been to Rohnert Park and don't know where that is!
Mall Security disbanded in June of 2002 after a glorious nine-year run. The break-up was due to creative differences in the band. At the last show, Mall Security sold out their only release: a limited edition 3.5" floppy disc featuring an mp3 of "Louie Louie." That song was recorded at Ironwood Studios in Seattle in 2000 with Monkey. Since their final show, members of Mall Security have never been in the same room together and are no longer on speaking terms. There is zero chance of a reunion.
Here is a rare unauthorized bootleg of a live performance of "burrito-OH-7." It is a song about our hero (and the intrepid manager of the Scotts Valley Car Wash), Kayvon. Enjoy!
