BIO
WMS the Sultan, an up and coming
producer in the Boston area, is making a name for
himself among underground Boston hip-hop artists with
his raw, hard-hitting, and innovative beats. He does
not limit himself to hip-hop, having produced reggae,
R&B, and alternative tracks. He has done work for
Skyzoo, Akrobatik, Drag-On and Edo G, just to name a few.
WMS the Sultan has been producing for a little over
five years, but his work on Joe Budden’s Mood Muzik
Volume 3: For Better of For Get Worse, the latest in a
trilogy of critically acclaimed mix tapes,
demonstrates that WMS can transcend the local
underground market.
WMS grew up around musicians; his father was a
skilled saxophonist in a jazz band. While
WMS never mastered a musical instrument, he realized
his skill for making beats. He started making beats
on a simple software program and graduated to more
sophisticated production aides like Motif rack, Midi
controller, Cakewalk sonar, and Soundforge. Having
listened to jazz, funk, and soul most his life, The Sultan’s
beats have a distinctive soulful quality. For the
first two years of his production career, WMS created
beats without the use of samples. When he started
using samples, he was very selective, choosing soulful
tracks with catchy melodies and hard-hitting drums.
When asked what sets him apart from other underground
producers, WMS says that he treats his “movement†like
a corporation with the mindset of a CEO.
He is not willing to fade into the background like many
nameless talented producers, who worked with some of
the biggest names in the industry. Instead, being influenced
by great business-minded producers like Timberland, Just Blaze,
RZA, Dr Dre and so many others, WMS endeavors to build a
corporation around his sound and help revive the artistic
quality of hip-hop, while simultaneously challenging the commercial
music industry with his innovation. While this a great task
to take on, WMS is on his way. He has local
recognition, having been awarded the Beat Maker of the
Year in the 2006 M.I.C Hip-Hop Awards—a New England
awards show. One day, WMS plans to receive global
recognition, but for now, he keeps grounded in his
vision.
His “movement†which is in its early phase, is a
collaborative effort. He truly listens to the artists
he works with, in order to build a track around them.
He perfects his sound by helping artists find their
sound. For WMS, its more than making beats, it is
about making music—music with a soul.
