About Me

The Athens Area Humane Society is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to promoting animal welfare and the human-animal bond in the Athens area.
Our mission is to end animal neglect, cruelty and suffering, to promote responsible pet ownership, to provide safe shelter, and to locate loving homes for homeless and abandoned animals.
Serving the community for more than twenty-five years, the Athens Area Humane Society is the only open-admission shelter in the Athens area for cats and other small domestic animals. Each year, the Shelter cares for 1200 abandoned and stray animals, striving to place as many as possible into loving lifelong homes.
The programs and services of the AAHS reach beyond sheltering and adoption alone. Counselors provide lifelong behavior consultation to adopted and community animals, and referrals when needed. We help community members search for their lost pets by providing search tips and maintain a database of lost and found records.
The AAHS is working to end pet overpopulation. We offer low-cost spay/neuter assistance to Clarke County residents with financial need. These pet owners would not otherwise be able to afford the surgery, but with the help of funding from Athens-Clarke County, their pets will lead longer, healthier lives, and will also no longer be contributors to the epidemic of pet overpopulation.
The AAHS believes that humane education is an essential component of building a kinder, more responsible community. That is why AAHS representatives visit scout troops, local schools, and civic organizations to educate about respect and kindness toward pets and all living things.
Take a look around our website to learn more about the work of AAHS. If you believe in our mission and programs, please see the Helping AAHS pages of our site for just a couple of ways you can make it possible for our work to continue.

Current News and Events

Call today to schedule one of the most important things you can do for your pet - a spay or neuter.

We at the Athens Area Humane Society are proud to announce that the opening of our brand new Athens Regional Spay & Neuter Center is November 19th, and we're now scheduling appointments!

The ARS&NC offers high quality care at affordable prices. Your pet and your community will both benefit from affordable spay/neuter services.

Prices for cats are $35 (male) and $45 (female), while dog prices are $55 (male) and $65 (female). Pets must be at least eight weeks old at the time of surgery. A feral cat package is also available. Visit the Center's website for more detail on the treatments we offer.

We at the AAHS believe that price should not be a barrier to having your pet spayed or neutered. Call 706-353-2287 today to schedule an appointment.

We look forward to giving your pet the best possible care.

The Athens Regional Spay & Neuter Center is located at 1781 Mars Hill Road, Watkinsville, Georgia 30677. Your drop-off and pick-up times will be assigned when you schedule your appointment.

Locked in a home with no way out and no one to care for them, nearly forty cats were rescued over the holiday weekend from an abandoned home in Athens. We at the Athens Area Humane Society are asking for your help to treat and care for these neglected pets.

On The News!!!

The AAHS Swing Dance Lessons were featured on WNEG Channel 32 News on February 8, 2007. Here is the clip from the show. Thanks to the UGA Department of Dance for the donation of the dance space and the UGA Swing Club for their time and talent to teach the lessons. There were 13 people who attended the two lessons and we raised $75 for the AAHS St. Valentine's Day Ball. Hopefully, next year we will raise even more!

I'd like to meet:

Anyone who loves animals, is an animal, has an animal, or wants an animal.

Please share your "Happy Tails" with us!
