He would listen to Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, Sam Cook and others on the radio and records imitating them while dancing to their music. He loved to sing along and imitate James Brown moves.Clarence started performing his own shows in 1979. He began performing in clubs at the age of 20, opening for Nashville artists such as Freddy Waters, Lavart Allison, and Rufus Thomas, just to name a few. When Clarence was seventeen, he got his first paying job as a performer at a club called Mondays in the Jackson Street Cafe. The headliners at the time were Freddy Waters and Lavart Allison. It was a regular gig every weekend until he joined the Marines in 1974. Clarence was honorably discharged in 1977 and returned to Nashville to restart his entertainment career. He performed nights at The Bamboo Lounge, now The College Crib. He eventually joined The Kadilacs as their lead singer.Clarence is currently performing solo with his own Rhythm and Blues band, “The Clarence Dobbins Revueâ€.
