Dark stars and damp squibs -- intelligent, quite possibly awkward people with a somewhat bent sense of humour, who are also interesting, arch, funny, and lovely.
In the everyday context, I get along best with a small mixed pool of odd amoeba I have met in varying circumstances, generally at parties and that kind of stuff. The one thing my friends tend to have in common is that they are very different to each other. And that they probably haven't met each other.I don't really hang out with any particular group of people but rather sort of towards the periphery of several groups. I'm not really in need of friends per se, but I'm definitely open to have dialogue with people about stuff I'm interested in. I'd like to find people who are as eccentric as I am, but cool, and interesting in their own right.
I respect good taste, talent, creativity, intelligence, and humour, but I don't like arrogance. I would rather have a daggy friend who's nice, funny and intelligent, than a fashionable friend who isn't.
Sydney can be quite a small world... you end up with a lot of acquaintances, but my close friends are minimal. I find it relieving to have a headspin when I start to get a sense of how massive the world is, and how many different paths there might actually be to take. I think this feeling approximates relief. ;)
A number of my friends and I found each other in random-ish circumstances - Georgia and Stella on public transport (a bus stop and a train respectively), Tim at a Broadway squat party - then others through other friends, sometimes 3 times removed or whatever, which I gather is half the point of this site. If you think you're similar to me by all means get in touch. You never know. I always like a bit of spontaneous adventure, a bit of chance.
My good friends usually are connected to me through a nexus of music/art/language, but are unpretentious and have good hearts. A lot of my friends are musicians from a range of genres (including those I'm not necessarily into), including my Tibetan friend Tenzin who has a fucking incredible voice, my friend Mali from Senegal, Tim who plays guitar in a metal band, Nyssa who's making jungle, etc.
I'm not really talented in this department. Devastating, I know ;) so I like to imagine i could be like Kim Gordon (ie learning to play cool guitar at an older age).
Also I would love to meet anyone who has a copy of the Juice Records (Adelaide) Dragonfly EP... ;)
I'll confess that there's a distinct sense of unease i feel navigating a space somewhat based on popularity (it makes me feel like it's a school camp in a way). I'm not very good at being facile and vacuous and gliding over glossy surfaces. But I am good at being slightly inane. And the truth is I like a bit of rough. I can be highly sociable for limited periods as long as I'm aware of an escape hatch.
