About Me

Tongues (QUE VIVA) is a non-profit collective working within and among queer, feminist, and women of color communities to increase cultural and community development, strengthen political involvement, and contribute to social justice efforts across diverse cultures, peoples, and geographic boundaries.
While in the hopes of reconstructing a language of our own, we use the word "Queer" to connote the range of identifiers with which we currently engage ourselves to include lesbian, bisexual, same-gender loving, gay, trans, two-spirited, jota, dyke, etc. We choose "Tongues" as a symbol of the rhythmic instrument on which we depend to communicate our realities, unleash desires; give voice to the traditionally silent, epitomize our sensuality; mobilize communities, and make and share erotic pleasure.
Our organizational motto “Queer women of color collaborating for social change” captures how we understand and thus prioritize our organizational goals. We understand that “social change” takes place on a variety of scales which may include the personal, local, national, and transnational, making it crucial that we make attempts to organize on each of these levels. One of the vehicles we use toward realizing our goals is Tongues Magazine, a print community publication replete with messages, articles, images, and text that reflect the multiplicities of Queer women of color lived realities while encouraging critical consciousness and action. Tongues Magazine addresses issues pertinent to social change, identity, arts and culture, sexuality, politics, and education.
Tongues is a volunteer-run collective, founded in 1999 and headed by an all volunteer board. We choose to work collaboratively and non-hierarchically in an effort to challenge the hegemonic order and composition of most organizations.
