Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confid

About Me

Some philosopher once said that our greatest glory consists not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall. Here's the Sonia version of that for you: The greatest measure of our strength lies not in never fearing, but in finding it within ourselves to face those fears. Bring to the table whatever you wish, but do it honestly. I don't have patience for those who attempt to fool themselves, or me. Still a cynic, a hedonist, an idealist. Still compassionate, and simultaneously abrasive when necessary. Still trying to live a life worth remembering. And definitely still on the greatest ride of a lifetime. Cap, pas cap? You should be.

Caveat:
I'M NOT OUT HERE LOOKING TO BE HIT ON. Cheeseballs, seek life elsewhere. And if you think I'm not talking about you, I'm talking SPECIFICALLY about you.

My Interests

World peace, subtlety and nuance, sensuality, good bourbon, progress, worn in jeans, savvy, language, baseball season, paella, bottom-dwelling shellfish, sociology, evolving, revelry, live blues, intelligent political debate, activism, compassion, the search, the journey, spiritual fervor, and Russian defectors. Not necessarily in that order.

My life liquid.

Something new I'm trying. I don't look this cool doing it. Yet.

He wrote succinctly, and brilliantly.

Good stuff. Keeps you chilled the hell out. If more people did this, we wouldn't need armies.

I'd like to meet:

Those with something of consequence to say. Those with unusual perspectives. Those who embrace the eccentric, but don't shun tradition. And those who can find the extraordinary in the seemingly mundane.

Music:

Nobody does the boogiedown like Calvin.Okay, right now: Angie Aparo, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Frou Frou, Samuel Barber, my father, Michael Tolcher, Jurrasic 5, Marc Broussard, Rage Against The Machine, Incubus, Aerosmith, Keane, Miles Davis, The Streets, Dinah Washington, Sound Tribe Sector 9, James Taylor (I AM from Massachusetts,) DJ Shadow, Indigo Girls, Oakenfold, Massive Attack, Damian Rice, St. Germaine, Clinton & PFunk, Umphries, Thievery Corp., Nickel Creek, The WORD, Beastie, Widespread, Particle, Ozomatli, Mayer, Cowboy Mouth, Pat McGee band, Sister Hazel, Jimmy Eat World, Dave, HENDRIX (always Hendrix) and anyone who can rip some decent BLUES.
...a soulful man.
Oh, and I recently rekindled my love affair with the Chili Peppers. BloodSugarSexMagik was a turbulent time, and the sweet sweet sounds of that album get me seriously hot.

Movies:

I dig the heavy stuff-- you're not going to find too many Jennifer Aniston romantic comedies on my shelves: Once, Crash, The Painted Veil, Apocalypto, Breach, Good Night and Good Luck, The Freedom Writers, Brazil, North Country, City of God, Iron Jawed Angels, Elizabeth, Blood Diamond, The Business of Strangers, The Rules of Attraction, This Is Spinal Tap, Miller's Crossing, Matchpoint, Motorcycle Diaries, V for Vendetta, The Salton Sea, Dangerous Beauty, The Full Monty, Y tu mama tambien, Running Scared, Cinderella Man, Goodfellas, The Departed, Snatch, Somewhere in Time, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Roman Holiday, Casablanca, XX/XY, Anna and the King, Dazed and Confused, The Red Violin, Closer, Children of Men, Fear and Loathing, The Waking Life, Dogma, The Life of David Gale, Run Lola Run, The Godfather, THE VILLAGE (a great sociological work Mr. M Night, even if a weak horror flick,) Pride and Prejudice (Jennifer Ehle, NOT Kiera Knightly,) A Beautiful Mind, Kingdom of Heaven (director's cut of course,) 300,
...and anything with this woman.

Television:

T.V. is furniture.

Books:

Chuck Klosterman's Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs is worth the read. Tower of Secrets by Viktor Sheymov, Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi, Beyond Dogma by the Dalai Lama, Aphrodite by Isabel Allende, Why People Believe Weird Things by Michael Shermer, Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund, Perfume by Patrick Suskind, A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Limits of Idealism by Melvyn Fein, Moneyball by Michael Lewis, Minority Report by H.L. Mencken, anything by P.G. Wodehouse, and just about anything else that challenges readers to consider things they wouldn't otherwise, understand the other side, or think for their bloody selves.

...this woman is absolutely brilliant.

Heroes:

The suave mofo who goes by the name Tenzin Gyatso, Erin Gruwell, Sarah Weddington, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, Anna Mueller, my mother, Eleanor Roosevelt, Alice Paul, Queen Elizabeth, Rosa Parks, Catherine the Great, Anais Nin, Lilith, and every other woman who ever had the strength and courage to stand up and say "I will not be the victim of patriarchy or a slave to the feminine stereotype."

Bitch du jour.

I thought I was being SO thrifty when I found a 12 pack of standard household light bulbs for $3 and snagged that family sized box. 6 weeks later I've changed out those bulbs from different outlets a...

More late night incoherence

I hate the really introspective, philosophical mood I get into when I don't go to bed at a decent hour. 2am rolls around, and I'm staring at my computer screen hoping something brilliant will come to...

What she learned in class today.

I went to a lecture at UT today. An award winning Russian novelist was speaking on the state of writing and literature in modern day Russia. In a very thick accent he read a prepared piece that took...
