Fauna Hodel is one of those people who can turn challenging circumstances into a life lesson. Her story is one of triumph over the pain of prejudice that she experienced growing up. I was telling a friend recently about the most remarkable, one-of-a-kind story, that I've ever heard in Hollywood. It's about the life (so far) of my friend Fauna Hodel. The tale she lays out in her book One Day She'll Darken is like nothing you will ever read. Given away under mysterious circumstances as a newborn, the book goes on to explore family in its darkest recesses and in its brightest glow. It's about race and class in modern America. It's about our common desire to know who we are, where we are from and where we belong. Added to that is the creepy mystery of L.A.'s greatest unsolved murder case and the role that Fauna's grandfather might have played in it. But more than anything, One Day She'll Darken is about a resilient woman, one who was dealt a cruel hand but who refused to let that be her life. A woman who is determined to show the world that what has happened to her can make a difference in the lives of others.

Joyce Kimble, A reviewer, 03/14/2008I experienced a wide range of emotions reading, "One Day She'll Darken". Since I have known and been best friends and classmates of Fauna (Pat) since we were eight years old. I have first hand knowledge of some of the people, and situations written in this book. Imagine always being told you're not black enough to be of "mixed" race" and having to defend yourself and say, "it says so on my birth certificate, that my daddy is Negro." How ironic to find out later that you were unknowingly defending a lie. Always having the burning desire to know who your birth mother is and being promised one day you'll know everything. Fauna's unconditional love of her mother, Jimmie Lee was very touching, I witnessed it first hand. You will be unable to put this book down, as you read about her family, their secrets and her resolve, to let everyone know you can overcome, even the darkest of beginnings. The ending of "One Day She'll Darken" was really just the beginning, to be continued! For who you are is not about color but character. Joyce "Gaston" Kimble
5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible journey!, March 30, 2008
Fauna's story is amazing! We don't always get to choose our life's circumstances. Fauna's journey is surreal and mysterious...her childhood...Hodel's connection...racial tensions and more. I read this book cover to cover very quickly as it kept me wanting to find out more about her story and what was going to happen next.Through all this Fauna is a survivor and one of the mosting loving people I have ever met in my life. Her story will inspire you to keep pressin' on through all life's challenges. I highly recommend this book! Also don't forget to check out the website about the book! The pictures are amazing and really helps to tie everything together.
