A couple of months ago I started to transfer all my old media to digital format. in doing so, i found footage that was truly a blast from the past - early tea party, thoughtforms underground, newyorican cafe, brooklyn moon, etc.
Looking at it I realized that we were part of a movement that at the least is worthy of documentation. does this footage exist anywhere else? do the current-day poetry jammers and fans of neo-soul and other alternative media know anything about the movement that never had a name?
in other art movements, we've seen the lasting impact of people writing histories from outside of a given community, and i thought it would be a great time to use the power of the internet to let us come together and tell our own story. ultimately we'll put together a documentary and/or a book, but right now i'm still in the preproduction phase, collecting info.
Who I'd like to meet:
the time frame: new york, underground arts scene, roughly during the 90's (1991-2001).
the focus: the events, the performances and performers, the artwork, the gatherings. the writing. the photography. the flyers, the footage.
If you were on stage, in the audience, or just have a story that hasn?ƒÂ¢??t been told... if you just want to shout out an unsung hero or voice... if you have still photos that you want to share...
let this be the place.
join the group "theunscenedoc" ...and invite friends who were there. we can use the group as a place to post photos, share stories, and reconnect.
