About Me

I'm a singer/songwriter and I play the bouzouki. I grew up in Fife, Scotland, but have had homes in many places including Edinburgh, Berlin and Sheffield. I currently live with my two sons, Jakob and Anton, in Belfast.
Since moving here from Berlin in 1999, I've been lecturing at Queen's University and in my spare time performing in the local songwriters' pubs and clubs. In December 2004 I showcased songs from my new album 'Star in the Morning' on Ardan, TG4's tv music and chat show (see videos here on myspace), accompanied by Gary Gates (guitar) and Edel Sullivan (fiddle). I'm working on new songs right now with a new band, The Corncrakes, featuring Dee McCaskie, Helen Mahaffy and Paul Webster.

I was an original member of the folk band Rua with Jimmy Young and Iain Macleod, recording the album 'Rua' (1986) and touring the folk clubs and festivals of the UK as well as New Zealand and Australia. I began writing songs and became a regular act at the Edinburgh Fringe between 1987 and 1993, the highlights of that time being touring as support for the Proclaimers on their 'Sunshine on Leith' tour, opening for Christy Moore at the Edinburgh Playhouse and playing the Reading Festival in 1990. I was privileged to be part of an indie folk-rock and roots revival of the late 1980s in Edinburgh that included bands such as Swamptrash and We Free Kings. An offshoot of this was the album 'The Roke' by Waterboys member Colin Blakey on which I guested.
In those days we would also do live broadcasts on Radio 2 and Radio Scotland. The album, "Capture an Image", was released in 1991. Other festivals included Celtic Connections, Glasgow Mayfest, Aberdeen Alternative and the Berlin Festival of Political Song. "Prussian Blue" came out in 1996, an album featuring musicians from Scotland, Germany and Ireland.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: daverobb.com
Band Members: Over the years I’ve regularly played with John McNairn, Edel Sullivan and Niall Kenny. On the early recordings Iain, Conrad, James and Garry from Swamptrash/ Shooglenifty helped me out. The live band "The Filmmakers" included Neil Sommerville, Jenny Gardner and Benny Tetteh-Lartey. Ex-Liberties Alison Clark and Colin Macfarlane performed on "Prussian Blue". The live line-ups in Germany in the 1990s featured Hannes Richter, Tom Miller, Maike Virk, Rainer Engelmann, Thomas "Essex" and Bernd Luedtke.
Influences: Singer/songwriters, pop, folk rock, Planxty etc, classical guitar; bands I'm listening to a lot at the moment: Belle and Sebastian, Nick Drake, Josh Ritter, Sufjan Stevens.
Sounds Like: "Highly original...The pictures he paints with his own words are powerful and universal" (The Scotsman)"A dynamic sense of rhythm and an engaging lyrical slant allied to his razor sharp singing make 'Prussian Blue' a delight. Throughout lies a uniform excellence and a genuinely exciting aura." (Rock n' Reel)
