Emerging triumphantly from the darkest forests of Britannia, Written In Torment is a new assault from the black metal forces. Engineered by sole member Leviathan, Written In Torment is a vital shot in the arm to the currently stagnating black metal scene, delivering punishing music in the true Norsk tradition of old. While other bands fatten themselves on novelty and pop melodies, Leviathan requires none of these so-called 'progressive' elements to be compelling. Instead, Written In Torment is storming the world through its own passion and integrity; an assault that will not be soon forgotten.
Written In Torment play black metal the way it was meant to be played: cold, dark, and brutally uncompromising. No reprieve from unrelenting sensory assault will be found in its music; no shelter from the battles that takes place in its notes. Written In Torment is ancient warfare made modern, like an army of Normans given the cold, calculating technology and precision to convert their savagery into extreme metal. Written In Torment will have no connection to the pop music called metal that is now so popular; it will always remain true to the black metal spirit.
None More Black Records is proud to present Written In Torment's debut mCD, 'The Uncreation'. Four explosive tracks of utterly devastating black metal produced by Jonny Maudling of the mighty Bal-Sagoth, 'The Uncreation' is the soundtrack to the force of chaos in man, 'The Uncreation' will cripple the listener with its fury but leave them begging for more. With pride and blistering rage such as this, 'The Uncreation' is by no means a record to be missed.

..LV-426.. kicks down your door like Nobby's eviction team, it's pointless asking questions, sit down and shut the fuck up. You should have paid your rent. WRITTEN IN TORMENT isn't here for meaningful discussion, he just wants to set the world on fire.
This introductory MCD starts off in bold, blazing fashion dambursting with racing melodic riffs with brief eddies of deadwater before the current drags you back into the froth. The occasional swirling solo sets the water aflame for a flickering moment but the flow soon snuffs it out. There are snatches of semi-acoustic breathers and other breaks in tempo but on the whole this is a lively bugger.
WIT has flung a rope behind him to anchor himself to a decade past and there is a nod to earlier EMPEROR and DISSECTION. The first two tracks are ragers that mix dynamics and certainly stir the blood. There is a barely discernible keyboard evident in some sections which merely thickens the atmosphere. Though possessed of a familiar sound, WIT has chucked as much variety into the mix to ensure the listening is an entertaining prospect without ruining the fluidity of these tracks.
..Remember With Fear.. begins as before with the same tumble of riffs falling over themselves to clear the start. This track has a greater weight of Death Metal aspects than the others with some strangled squawk in amongst it. Towards the end it slows considerably, ending in more sinister fashion with a stalking lead refrain and what's that behind you keys. The production is perfect for the music, the energy of the drums is reflected at all times whether they are at a clatter or just punctuating the crawl through ..Death Is Only The Beginning... The bass has also laced up it's boots and jumped in to give the proceedings a good kicking, it also provides some mellower tones to slower passages. The man himself croaks all over these songs, having borrowed the larynx from someone already long departed.
As suggested, the final track has none of the brigandage of the preceding tracks and drifts along awhile before the buzz of the guitar lends it purpose. Though essentially dirge-like, again a strong lead and solid drum tattoo keeps the tedium at bay before it fizzles away at the end.
WRITTEN IN TORMENT has a full lengther in the pipeline for next year, rumoured to be a more spiteful beast than ..The Uncreation,.. on the strength of this one, I'm ready for a ripping.

Written In Torment - The Uncreation
Goddamn I am having a hard time not listening to ..The Uncreation,.. which is the debut album from Written In Torment. Ever since I opened the package and put the disc in my player it has been haunting me. Maybe its self-destruction but the music on this disc is as rapturous as a heroin fix, evil as a Jezebel cunt, and wintry as a stainless steel autopsy table.
Pulling ears into the fury is an overwhelming bleakness of nefarious guitars spinning over drums played fast enough that the kit must have been riveted to the ground to prevent it from crumbling. Leviathan, who is the bands sole member, fluidly massacres all the instruments. His vocals are wilderness eerie screeches rising from savagely rustic trees. The singing appropriately compliments tightly picked guitars played in a frenzy of tremolo notes of battlefield dementia. The bass and drums roll with tumultuous splendor reaping a heathenish carnage akin to the Norman Conquest pillaging.
When listening to ..The Uncreation.. I cannot help but feel the vibe of early Emperor wrapped into Impiety. This sound is most obvious during the fast parts of each track giving the listener a sense of impending war, as if raiders are storming down a slope. Woven into the fight are luminous melodies with carefully crafted leads. This affect reminds me of early Abigor twisted into Abyssos. Most conventionally splendid about Leviathan..s compositions is that the songs are devoid of obnoxious orchestra keyboards. The result is unmerciful Black Metal with an epic warrior ambiance.
Considering that ..The Uncreation.. is an EP my only complaint is trivial, in that I wish it were a full-length LP. Still, hearing a minutia of what Written In Torment has to offer goes superbly long in terms of wanting to listen to more of what is sure to be awesome on future recordings. Fans, get your ears into ..Written In Torment,.. cause the music on ..The Uncreation.. is a wonderful debut that will gash your throat with a acidic razor remorselessly.

"Its a great satisfaction to find once in a while a CD with this good taste. This is a one-man band project, formed in 2003, and this is its first work, with which introduces itself. Surely in little time we will hear more about this promising band.
I was surprised with this EPs quality in terms of sound and composition, very good song writing, from complex and well executed riffs, to fast and technical guitar solos (thanks to Mr. Mark Greenwell, Bal-Sagoth's bass guitar), accompanied by fast and continuous drum blastbeats that make you move your hair non-stop.
Each note you hear lets you see clear Emperor and Dissection influences (mostly acoustic parts), but applying a style and sound that even it sounds like them sometimes, keeps the distance from these mentioned bands. Piercing vocals accompany every rhythm at perfection in its different registers, with deep and sharp parts perfectly executed. Definitively, four song varied enough for those who enjoy vintage black metal to give an opportunity to this "The Uncreation"
