The story of Monophobic started in 1991 when I was just a young hip hop freak. I was anxious to make my own tracks. Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill and Beastie Boys music was beautiful to me. I wanted to be part of that movement. I started to make hip hop joints, but the language was Finnish.
My interest in Hip Hop started in 1986 when Mantronix released the album entitled “Music Madnessâ€. My brother Juice; played all kind of crazy stuff when I was a growing up. I have a lot of love for him for showing me the world of music. Anyways, it was something I'd never heard before, and you can hear the influence immediately when you listen to my music. “Rebel Without A Pause†by Public Enemy in 1987 blew my brains out. At the age of 14 I became a real hardcore Hip Hop fan
In 1991 I made three demo tapes under my nickname Tonkku; I sold a couple of hundred copies. It was nice because I made them with a shitty 4-track recorder. All of the beats were stolen from a vast array of records. So underground indeed...
At that time groups like Shut Up And Dance, Genocide II and Silver Bullet were fuckin' up my head with a tough fast and angry mixture of Rap and post-Jungle grooves. In that era there was a lot of Techno playing and damn, it was hot! I wan to give a Big up to my friend DJ Arde who has guided me musically so much through these years. He taught me how to listen to all kinds of modern dance music. It was an amazing time in my life when it came to the evolution of music
1993 was the year when I heard Jungle / Drum’n’Bass for the first time. The track was Boogie Times Tribe’s “The Dark Stranger†and goddamn that shit was dope! My interest in this new form of breaks started to grow; but it was so weird and new to me. I never thought of making it by myself
In 1995 I made one Hip Hop demo in English under the name of MC Tony. But the scene didn't give me anything new at all except Public Enemy, which is still the greatest group of all time to me. Much love and respect to Chuck D
Late 1997 I started experimenting beats and sounds, trying to create something between old Electro and modern Breakbeat with some faster Drum'n'Bass beats. By mixing them together, the elements that I love in electronic dance music and Big Beat, Trip Hop, and Jungle are all the same to me. Whether fast or slow, just plain Breakbeat music was what I wanted to do so here it is: Electronic 80's/90's/00's hybrid music is called MONOPHOBIC
