Downtown Rebels

ITALIANO: Partiti nel 1997 dai centri sociali e dai locali di Torino e dintorni, i Downtown Rebels hanno portato la loro musica in ogni angolo d'Italia, dai paesi più piccoli e sperduti ai palcoscenici più importanti (Babylonia, Hiroshima, Vibra, tre partecipazioni al Rototom Sunsplah…) Amano definirsi un gruppo roots in quanto si sono da sempre ispirati ad artisti "storici" giamaicani quali Israel Vibration e Gladiators; in realtà il loro reggae, aperto a molteplici contaminazioni, ha un sound molto personale e riconoscibile. I testi trattano argomenti quali la critica alla cultura occidentale corrotta e portatrice di falsi valori, impegno sociale o anche, più semplicemente, favole, visioni e storie metropolitane. Il loro punto di forza è senz'altro il live: energia, positive vibrations e grande capacità di "tenere il palco". Nel 2001 realizzano il loro primo cd “Una calma nota” (Puzzle Records): un ottimo esordio, dice la critica. Il tour promozionale culmina nel 2003 con l'apertura dell'unica data italiana degli Israel Vibration. Nel 2004 spariscono misteriosamente dalle scene…ma vi ricompaiono dopo poco con il progetto Soul Melody: una super Marley-tribute-band, formata dai migliori musicisti della scena reggae torinese, che li vede protagonisti di un tour e di un film-documentario (realizzato dal regista Gigi Roccati) che è ormai un cult… in questo periodo il cantautore Lulu , il tastierista e compositore Jahka, la vocalist Nadia ed il batterista Ale Raise intraprendono svariati progetti solisti. Nell’autunno 2005 i Downtown Rebels si riuniscono per tentare una nuova avventura discografica e, soprattutto, per ricominciare a suonare dal vivo, presentando in anteprima alcuni nuovi brani. Nel gennaio 2006 registrano il singolo che anticipa l’uscita del nuovo cd: si tratta di “Vivo per questo”, una dichiarazione di intenti nei confronti della musica scritta proprio nei momenti più scuri , quando qualcuno pensava fosse finita …e invece better must come: nel febbraio 2006, in occasione delle Olimpiadi, si esibiscono sul main stage di Medals Plaza facendo muovere al ritmo del reggae una folla oceanica in tutta Torino downtown… a marzo partecipano all'Italian Reggae Contest e, votati per acclamazione popolare, nel mese di luglio si esibiscono per la terza volta al Rototom Sunsplash. Attualmente stanno registrando nuovi brani per il prossimo album; nell'autunno 2007 festeggeranno i dieci anni di attività e si prevedono grosse celebrazioni...soon come!....................................................... ............................................. ENGLISH: DOWNTOWN REBELS- (Made in Turin - since 1997)Founded in Turin in 1997, Downtown Rebels are one of the most popular bands in the Italian reggae scene. Starting from small clubs in Turin, in almost ten years down the road they reached the most important clubs and reggae festivals all over Italy. They play roots reggae (their favourite artists are people like Bob Marley, Israel Vibration, Gladiators, Culture, Luciano and many more) influenced and inspired by many contaminations; so they crated their clearly recognizable sound. Lyrics are about their own reality: sometimes they are conscious and ask for social justice, freedom and fighting against the corruption of Babylon system; sometimes they simply talk about dreams, visions, love and metropolitan tales. On stage is where they give their best; their live shows are really energetic, powerful and full of positive vibrations. In 2001 they recorded their first album “Una calma nota” for an independent label (featuring many musicians form the Turin reggae scene). During the promotional tour they travelled all over Italy for two years, from north to south, from small villages to big cities, by bus, car, train or ship, bringing their reggae everywhere. Sometimes they also performed live with a side project called “Soul Melody”, a big Marley cover band made of ten musicians from Downtown Rebels and friends. In 2003 difficult times came for the band: too hard to find a serious production for the second album, too hard for some of them to survive in this Babylon…so rumours of splitting up started spreading. In 2004 they came back on stage, but only for the Soul Melody project; at the same time lead singer Lulu , keyboards player and composer Jahka, the vocalist Nadia and the drummer Ale Raise started solo careers. In late 2005 the band decide to reunite and try a new discographic project: the first single of the new album is “Vivo per questo” (“Living for this”), the second one is called “Con musica” (“With muisc”)…clear declarations about keepin’ on playing together and keepin’ on living in a conscious-rebel way of life. In summer 2006 they performed for the third time at the “Rototom Sunsplash”, one of the most important festivals in Europe. Now still things a gwaan…they’re recording many songs for their new album in an independent studio and preparing the new tour to celebrate ten years of music in autumn 2007…soon come! ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------
