Derrick Estefan was born in LA. but raised in NY and CA. At the tender age of 10 he knew he wanted to be a musican. In 85’ he joined Rush influenced band Page 11, as bassist. He also played R & B with other local artists, until moving to CO. in 90’. In 92’ he met Nile Leach. and joined his progressive metal/punk band Lethal and The Floor for the next 5 years. Then in 97’ , inspired by the latin grooves of Sheila E. and Tito Puente, he decided to move to Miami and study percussion and drums with latin stars Alex Leon jr (01/1999’ til 11/1999 timbales), Danial Perez (06/2000’ til 05/2004’ drums), and Edwin Torres (05/2005 til 02/2006 congas). He believes in life-long learning and takes lessons and gets knowledge wherever he can. While living here in Miami he has played with local artist such as: Punk rocker Victor Garcia and Arranca (bass), hard rock band Ferro with Joel Ferro and Rick Diaz (bass), salsa band Mojito (congas), Acoustic rocker Tal (drums), Indie acoustic rock band Plan B with Jazz Salm and Kristen Harrison (drums). He has also ran sound for various groups as well as The Pawnshop Lounge in Miami. In the spring of 06’ he was running sound for Jahfe when Sha, the band’s co leader, realized Derrick was a conga player. Derrick was entranced with their eclectic rythyms and positive vibe and accepted Sha’s invitation to come and play. He studied with Sha Sanon to further enhance his knowledge of traditional haitian roots music. Currently he has been performing with Miami’s Kompa sensation D’SIRE 3 (congas) since 01/2007. When not playing drums and percussion, he also enjoys cycling, diving, the beach, coconuts, and being outdoors.
