GREENLIGHT Ambassadors of the Breed to TELEVISION BROADCAST!
Ambassadors of the Breed
is a 5-minute podcast produced specifically for a contest through Current TV based on the concept of tolerance. This short documentary attempts to shed a positive light on a mixed breed of dogs challenged by a media-fueled bad reputation that has inspired cities to impose breed specific legislation, i.e., bans on certain types of dogs usually loosely defined by animal control officials. The Pit Bull is a type of dog we think we all know. Certainly, the media has defined the mixed breed as a sidewalk terrorist, a child killer, and a thug's best friend. When I turned my camera on a community of Pit Bulls in the San Francisco Bay area - in a month, I met Buddy, Sophia, Gladys, Kasey, Charlotte, Kayla, Slayer, Puddin, and Po - just a modest sample of a deeply misunderstood breed, the dogs and their advocates presented a strong defense in the case against Breed Specific Legislation.
Pit Bull has become an ugly word for these dogs. As if backyard breeding, abuse, and neglect were not threatening enough, their bad reputation now becomes enemy #1. I caught good examples of the breed in dog parks, animal shelters, even tucked away in an alley of the Tenderloin.
I offer these ambassadors to educate the public, calm our fears, and defend their rights. You will watch this video with your own preconceptions about this breed, especially if you do not own a Pit Bull. We are all susceptible to believing stereotypes, yet it feels better when we unlearn them. Who better to teach us a lesson in tolerance than the animal we regard as our best friend.
