Ever since the beginning of his jazz studies at the conservatory in Trondheim, throughout his studies and professional work as a bass player having had numerous sideman gigs, Lars Martin Vik has been composing and preparing his own material which is now finally presented in the form of the album "Växthus".
This music is part jazz, part a nordic variation of americana and gospel music.
All instrumental, recorded as an acoustic Jazz quartet, enhanced by subtle old-school production techniques.
Lars Martin has worked hard with his chosen musicians to cut down on the complexity and lenghty improvisations of the "traditional modern" jazz forms, focusing on short form, arrangements, melodic and harmonic efficiency to be able to put musical substance into the 3-4 minute lenghts of the popular format.
Drummer Terje Engen is not afraid to replace the top heavy cymbal focused jazz oriented style with his knowledge of pop-drumming of all times, resulting in an quite recognizable sound. He has put this to use as a sideman, session , and freelance drummer for years, and also releases his debut record as a leader this fall with his own mini big-band: "Norsk Kurveunion".
On top of this rhythm section the melodic and harmony workload is shared between Pianist Gunvald Hagen with his distinct Nordic sound, and guitarist Audun Borrmann, which also doubles as a recording engineer (his main focus in latter years)and general noisemaker on this album.
