Real Name - Luke Firth
DJ Name - Firthy
Location - Barnsley, South Yorkshire, UK
Styles Played - Makina & Hardcore 1994 to Present Day, at home I have a very wide range of styles I enjoy playing including Trance, Drum and Bass, Hard Dance and much more. I am very open minded with my music and would consider myself as a diverse DJ.
Background Info – From getting into the scene at a very young age, Firthy had grown up listening to music from all corners of the hard dance spectrum, from his early Bonkers collection, to his Lisa Lashes Euphoria CD’s, to his mates Uprising tapes, Firthy always had and enjoyed a very wide and varied musical taste.
It all kicked off whilst in his last year at school, one of Firthy’s mates had just got a set of decks, eagerly interested, Firthy was round at his house the following day to look at them and play on them, wanting to know what each button, knob and fader did, and how the hell you were supposed to mix two records together! Firthy fell in love instantly, and went home with his heart set on getting his very own set of decks!
The DJ – It was in June ’04 when he got his first set of decks, a pair of Citronic PD1 mk2’s and a Gemini PS-540i mixer, sorted! So Firthy set off practising as much as possible every day, recording mixes and listening back, and sending off to more experienced DJ's for constructive criticism and pointers on how to improve.
At the end of 2004 and Firthy wanted more people to hear his sound, through getting to know a few like-minded people he and some friends decided that they would look into creating their very own internet radio station for up and coming DJ’s to promote themselves and let people listen to them DJ live worldwide, Hardcore United Radio (www.HardcoreUnited.co.uk) was born.
Fast forward 6 months, Hardcore United has become very successful with a very strong line-up of DJ’s and top tier guests playing week in week out, but after speaking to local up and coming DJ’s D-Jam and Martin Space they decided that they needed to expand.
The idea of a massive radio show came to mind, where DJ’s and MC’s could get together and socialise without the atmosphere and sound levels of a club environment. These all ran very successful and attracted a lot of new people to Hardcore United and got our DJ’s a lot of attention.
Northern Gathering kept expanding, they found themselves been asked to host back rooms at some of the north’s top hard dance nights including Uprising and Hardr:ve, and even managed to secure themselves a place at the legendary NCPM in Sheffield!
However, due to lack of venue Northern Gathering projects are currently on hold.
In August 2005, Firthy got his first proper booking at Sheffield’s all ages dance event, JADE. The set seemed to go down a treat and a lot of valuable experience was gained. After this, bookings began to pick up as did experience, Firthy found himself playing at various events around the region almost every weekend and meeting lots of new people along the way!
The Future – In the future Firthy plans to carry on pushing himself as much as possible, and to carry on receiving regular bookings and keep aiming higher, aswell as spreading further a-field. He also plans to take Hardcore United further and further, helping to promote new talent and been a central source for the northern hard dance scene.
Firthy also plans on expanding his knowledge in the studio, and aims to start producing his own material to play out in clubs across the region.
