Free Profile CounterHi, my name's Dave. I live in Barrow in Furness, up on the North West coast of England in the UK.I live with my lovely wife Alex, we got married on May 12th 2007! Bought our first home together May 2006. I'm a part-time volunteer worker at a local Disability charity, helping give info and advice and helping in the member?s cafe. I am 31 years old and a full-time wheelchair user. I was born with a congenital condition called PFFD, PFFD stands for It sounds very complex, but when you look at each word individually it is actually a very good description of the condition. ? Proximal - nearest the point of attachment or centre of the body ? Femoral - pertaining to the thigh bone or femur ? Focal - pertaining to a focus or starting point ? Deficiency - a lack; less than the normal amount In other words, the end of the thigh bone closest to the hip is too short or not completely developed, the hip socket may also be affected. It can effect people on one or both sides, i was born with it bilaterally, both sides. For me it meant nothing was right from my hips down, hips, knees, ankles and feet affected. I also have Fibula Hemimelia, which meant i was born with neither of my fibia bones in the lower legs, i have 2 joined toes on my left foot and had only 3 toes on my right foot (i say had, i had a through knee amputation on my right side in 1985, this was due to complications following a wedge osteotomy to stabilse my right hip in 1983). In some bilateral cases the upper body may also be effected and i was born with only half my left arm. So i suppose i look like a double amputee, but i've only had the one amputation. A fantastic website for information and support about this condition is http://www.pffd.org Their members either have PFFD or family members with it. See blog above for more details.
