Litha Lore Mid Summer
Litha (pronounced "LITH-ah") is one of the Lesser Wiccan Sabbats and is usually celebrated on June 21st, but varies somewhat from the 20th to the 23rd, dependant upon the Earth's rotation around the Sun (check the calendar). According to the old folklore calendar, Summer begins on Beltane (May 1st) and ends on Lughnassadh (August 1st), with the Summer Solstice midway between the two, marking MID-Summer. This makes more logical sense than suggesting that Summer begins on the day when the Sun's power begins to wane and the days grow shorter...
The most common other names for this holiday are the Summer Solstice or Midsummer, and it celebrates the arrival of Summer, when the hours of daylight are longest. The Sun is now at the highest point before beginning its slide into darkness. Other names for this time in the Wheel of the Year include Alban Heruin, (Caledonii or the Druids), Alban Hefin (Anglo-Saxon Tradition), Sun Blessing, Gathering Day (Welsh), Whit Sunday, Whitsuntide, Vestalia (Ancient Roman), the Feast of Epona (Ancient Gaulish), All-Couple's Day (Greek), and St. John's Day. Scottish Pecti-Witans celebrate Feill-Sheathain on July 5th. In the Italian tradition of Aridian Strega, this Sabbat (Strega Witches call them Treguendas rather than Sabbats) is known as Summer Fest - La Festa dell'Estate. Scandinavians celebrate this holiday at a later date and call it Thing-Tide. In England, June 21st is "The Day of Cerridwen and Her Cauldron". And in Ireland, this day is dedicated to the faery goddess Aine of Knockaine. And finally, in Northern Europe - June 21st is "The Day of the Green Man".
The Litha Sabbat is a time to celebrate both work and leisure, it is a time for children and childlike play. It is a time to celebrate the ending of the waxing year and the beginning of the waning year, in preparation for the harvest to come. Midsummer is a time to absorb the Sun's warming rays and it is another fertility Sabbat, not only for humans, but also for crops and animals. Wiccans consider the Goddess to be heavy with pregnancy from the mating at Beltane - honor is given to Her. The Sun God is celebrated as the Sun is at its peak in the sky and we celebrate His approaching fatherhood - honor is also given to Him. The faeries abound at this time and it is customary to leave offerings - such as food or herbs - for them in the evening.
Symbols to represent the Litha Sabbat are such things as fire, the Sun, blades, mistletoe, oak trees, balefires, Sun wheels and faeries. Altar decorations might include Summertime flowers - especially sunflowers - love amulets, seashells, aromatic potpourri and Summer fruits. If you made Sun wheels at Imbolc, you should now display them prominently. Hang them from the ceiling or place them on trees in your yard. You may also want to decorate them with yellow and gold ribbons and Summer herbs.
Deities associated with Litha include all Father Gods and Mother Goddesses, Pregnant Goddesses and Sun Deities. Particular emphasis might be placed on the Goddesses Aphrodite, Astarte, Freya, Hathor, Ishtar, Venus and other Goddesses who preside over love, passion and beauty. Other Litha deities include Athena, Artemis, Dana, Kali, Isis, Juno, Apollo, Dagda, Gwydion, Helios, Llew, Oak/Holly King, Lugh, Ra, Sol, Zeus, Prometheus, Ares, and Thor.
The cycle of fertility has been expressed in many god-forms. One pair of these - which has persisted from early Pagan times to modern folklore - is that of the Oak King and the Holly King, Gods respectively of the Waxing Year and the Waning Year. The Oak King rules from Midwinter to Midsummer - the period of Fertility, Expansion and Growth; while the Holly King reigns from Midsummer to Midwinter - the period of Harvest, Withdrawal and Wisdom. They are the light and dark twins, each being the other's alternate self, thus being one. Each represents a necessary phase in the natural rhythm, therefore both are good. At the two changeover points, they symbolically meet in combat. The incoming twin - the Oak King at Midwinter, the Holly King at Midsummer - "slays" the outgoing one. But the defeated twin is not actually considered dead - he has merely withdrawn during the six months of his brother's rule.
On Midsummer Night, field and forest elves, sprites, and fairies abound in great numbers - making this a great time to commune with them. Litha is considered one of the best times to perform magicks of all kinds, for it is considered a time of great magickal power. Especially effective magick and spells at this time include the performance of those for love, healing and prosperity. A wreath can be made for your door with yellow feathers for prosperity and red feathers for sexuality - intertwined and tied together with ivy. This is also a very good time to perform blessings and protection spells for your pets or other animals. You may want to choose to include your pet within your cast Circle at this Sabbat celebration, and even present him or her with a special gift (such as a tiny pentacle to attach to his or her collar). I have done this and found it very rewarding and heartwarming.
Nurturing and love are key actions related to Midsummer. If you haven't yet done so, Litha is a good time to perform your Self-Dedication Ceremony... or - if you have been practicing Wicca for a while - you may choose to perform a simple Re-dedication/Affirmation as a part of your Sabbat celebration. Ritual actions for Litha might include placing a flower-ringed cauldron upon your altar, plunging of the sword (or athame) into the cauldron, balefire leaping (outdoors) and the gathering and drying of herbs. Herbs can be dried over the ritual fire if you're celebrating outdoors. Leap the bonfire for purification and renewed energy. Ritually, use mirrors to capture the light of the Sun or the flames of the fire. Some things that are considered taboo on this holiday are giving away fire, sleeping away from home, and neglecting animals.
Colors associated with the Summer Solstice include white, red, maize yellow or golden yellow, green, blue and tan. Altar candles could be either a combination of blue, green, and yellow --- or red and gold. Stones to use during Litha include all green gemstones, especially emerald and jade. Other appropriate gemstones are tiger's eye, lapus lazuli and diamonds. Animals associated with this Sabbat include robins, wrens, all Summer birds, horses and cattle. Mythical creatures include satyrs, faeries, firebirds, dragons, thunderbirds and manticores.
Plants associated with Midsummer are oak, mistletoe, frankincense, lemon, sandalwood, heliotrope, copal, saffron, galangal, laurel and ylang-ylang. Herbs associated with this Sabbat are chamomile, cinquefoil, elder, fennel, hemp, larkspur, lavender, male fern, mugwort, pine, roses, Saint John's wort, wild thyme, wisteria and verbena. Traditionally, herbs gathered on this day are extremely powerful. Incense for the Litha Sabbat Ritual might be a combination of any of the following or simply one of them by itself... frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood, lemon, pine, jasmine, rose, lotus, or wysteria.
Traditional Pagan foods for Litha include fresh vegetables of all kinds and fresh fruits such as lemons and oranges. Other standard fare may be pumpernickel bread as well as Summer squash and any yellow or orange colored foods. Flaming foods are also appropriate. Traditional drinks are ale, mead, and fresh fruit juice of any kind.
May the Lord and Lady bless you all with lots of love, prosperity, health, and well-being!

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter. ~e e cummings
You are the writer, director, and actor of your life's play. Write big parts, direct with
humor and let your actor self shine.
Desiderata
-- written by Max Ehrmann in the 1920s --
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
You don't stop laughing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop laughing.~
Michael Pritchard
Thoughts are the bricks that make up your reality.
Before the earth, before the sky,
was there nothing?
No. There was something.
Something like a cloud
or a nebula, a mist with no source.
It was all silence and distance.
But it moved, like a great silent
wheel, in its great solitude.
This was the source of all,
the mother of creation.
If you were forced to name it,
I will call it The Great Tao,
the way itself, endless and eternal.
~Chinese Tao Te Ching
Seven Habits of Enlightened Souls
1. Be quiet. At least once a day, sit down. There is a source within each one of us called the spirit or soul. It is a crime to disturb the inner peace. This peace is our power to create positive things in our life. Try speaking softly and slowly than your usual way. Speaking this way is more powerful because it attracts the peace in others. Just be aware of your words. Savour their energy and rhythm.
2. Let go. Don't hold on to anything with your hand or with your mind. Many think that doing this means losing. If you don't release the old, you can't get anything new. This requires detachment. Letting go means moderating excessive attachment to material possessions, to emotions, or to the status quo or comfort zones in our lives.
3. Let it be. We are great fixers of other people's lives. We're trying to write somebody else's script. We are absent from our own lives because we're busy living the life of others. Acceptance and contentment are the first steps to healthy relationships. An example is our appreciation of the moon, which is beyond change. We never dream of wanting to change or influence it, nor have we the slightest remorse that the same face of the moon is always turned toward us: We have no need to see the dark side. Extend this deep feeling of acceptance to the people we meet.
4. Listen in. Use your intuition, the inner tutor and the voice of wisdom. Because we have held on to our false beliefs for so long, we ignore and distrust our inner voice and tell it to shut up. The process of enlightenment is the process of learning to trust that inner voice once again. Example is the conscience as intuition at work. When we misbehave, the voice of conscience alerts us to our mistake. We may shun that voice, engaging in reason as the ally of ego to justify our deeds. Yet the troubling intuitive disapproval of conscience will go on to make its rebukes. We can either suppress the advice or repair the wrong.
5. Wake up. Habits are programmed by our external conditioning. Write down your habits then decide which ones to strike out and replace them with virtues. Visualize the virtue you want to create and empower that image. For example, if you want to develop patience, visualize yourself as a patient person. Watch, feel and manifest patience in every action you do until it becomes your behavior. Waking up is to consciously choose your behavior and thereby create the personality you want. Never believe anyone who says, "You can never change."
6. Know yourself. Look behind the "I want" attitude, those desires that make us need things that are not necessary. The truth is, happiness is a choice, not a chore, a decision to bring out from the self. Affirm that you are happiness, a source of happiness.
7. Pass it on.Take one idea from this article then pass it on to another. You empower yourself and the other as you share this truth. This is also giving value to the time you spent reading this. Life is like a river, constantly flowing. The highest purpose of rivers is to nourish plants and people who are fellow travelers in the journey of life. Our highest purpose is to nourish others. Like the river, the greatest gift one can give is wisdom. Through this, you empower yourself as well as others. Those who flow through life as life flows, feel no wear... feel no tear... need no mending... no repair. - Unknown

Crones Corner - Sea Salt Protection Spell
.
People over the world agree that salt has cleansing, restorative, and
curative powers. In order to rid yourself of negativity, you can’t go wrong
using sea salt. Sea salt holds many of the essential healing properties of
nature. To increase strength, luck, and fortitude, go to your grocer or
health-food store and buy sea salt. Spread the salt on the areas you wish
cleansed. Lightly sprinkle sea salt into your bath, saying:
Salt of ocean,
Salt of earth,
From ocean I sprang, upon my birth.
With Venus I rose above sea and shell,
The power of salt makes everything well.
We, this people, on a small and lonely planet
Traveling through casual space
Past aloof stars, across the way of indifferent suns
To a destination where all signs tell us
It is possible and imperative that we learn
A brave and startling truth
And when we come to it
To the day of peacemaking
When we release our fingers
From fists of hostility
And allow the pure air to cool our palms
When we come to it
When the curtain falls on the minstrel show of hate
And faces sooted with scorn are scrubbed clean
When battlefields and coliseum
No longer rake our unique and particular sons and daughters
Up with the bruised and bloody grass
To lie in identical plots in foreign soil
When the rapacious storming of the churches
The screaming racket in the temples have ceased
When the pennants are waving gaily
When the banners of the world tremble
Stoutly in the good, clean breeze
When we come to it
When we let the rifles fall from our shoulders
And children dress their dolls in flags of truce
When land mines of death have been removed
And the aged can walk into evenings of peace
When religious ritual is not perfumed
By the incense of burning flesh
And childhood dreams are not kicked awake
By nightmares of abuse
When we come to it
Then we will confess that not the Pyramids
With their stones set in mysterious perfection
Nor the Gardens of Babylon
Hanging as eternal beauty
In our collective memory
Not the Grand Canyon
Kindled into delicious color
By Western sunsets
Nor the Danube, flowing its blue soul into Europe
Not the sacred peak of Mount Fuji
Stretching to the Rising Sun
Neither Father Amazon nor Mother Mississippi who, without favor,
Nurture all creatures in the depths and on the shores
These are not the only wonders of the world
When we come to it
We, this people, on this minuscule and kithless globe
Who reach daily for the bomb, the blade and the dagger
Yet who petition in the dark for tokens of peace
We, this people on this mote of matter
In whose mouths abide cankerous words
Which challenge our very existence
Yet out of those same mouths
Come songs of such exquisite sweetness
That the heart falters in its labor
And the body is quieted into awe
We, this people, on this small and drifting planet
Whose hands can strike with such abandon
That in a twinkling, life is sapped from the living
Yet those same hands can touch with such healing, irresistible
tenderness
That the haughty neck is happy to bow
And the proud back is glad to bend
Out of such chaos, of such contradiction
We learn that we are neither devils nor divines
When we come to it
We, this people, on this wayward, floating body
Created on this earth, of this earth
Have the power to fashion for this earth
A climate where every man and every woman
Can live freely without sanctimonious piety
Without crippling fear
When we come to it
We must confess that we are the possible
We are the miraculous, the true wonder of this world
That is when, and only when
We come to it.

The Goddess.
When they ask to see your Gods,
tell them how you have seen,
The heavens starry display,
Caught in blades of grass,
On moonlit winters nights.
Or rainbows of light,
From dragonflies wings,
On a golden summer day.
Swans like pale white ghosts,
Dissolve from the nebulous haze,
Of early spring mornings.
When they ask to see your Gods,
tell them how you have heard,
The fall of winter snow,
Like glittering butterflies
On fields white with frost.
The notes of distant thunder,
Like divine symphonies,
Roll across the drum of the sky.
The song of owls,
Like haunting melodies,
Resonate through the still of night.
When they ask to see your Gods,
tell them how you have tasted,
The bitter tang of salt,
Caught in sea spray,
On a stormed tossed winter's day.
Or the taste of the coming storm,
In air thick with ozone,
During the sultry heat of summer.
Of water from mountain streams,
As pure and cold as ice,
More efficacious than wine itself.

Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
Chapter 1
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost ... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
Chapter 2
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place.
But it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter 3
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Healing by Moonlight Spell
The Moon has always fascinated us with its beauty and the magnetic
pull
it exerts on the tides buried within each of us. We can use the Moon's
energy to help us heal. For a quicker recovery from an illness, place
a
clear glass bowl on a mirror. Put the mirror and bowl outside on an
even surface. If you can't go outside, place them in a window that
will
catch the light of the Moon as it passes through its phases. Fill the
bowl with clear spring water, and say this three times: "The Moon will
rise, and so will I." When you see the New Moon reflected in the
water,
take a drink of the Moon-kissed water. Add some extra water, and
continue to take a sip each night, envisioning your body being healed
and energized with Moon glow. During the next Full Moon, drink all of
the water.By: Paniteowl

"Magick Potions" by Gernia Dunwich
Potion to Increase Psychic Powers
On a night when the moon is full, drink a magickal tea brewed from any of the following herbs:
Borage
Ruled by the planet Jupiter and the element of Air, this herb works especially well for male Witches who desire an increase in their clairvoyant abilities.
Kava Kava
Ruled by the planet Saturn and the element of Water, the root of this plant has been used in Polynesian magickal practices for centuries. To make an infusion, place the root in a small pot or cauldron. Pour one cup of boiled water over the root. Cover with a lid and let steep until cools, then place it in the refrigerator and keep it there overnight. A word of caution: Do not drink kava kava infusions in large amounts or for extended period of time because kidney damage may result!
Mugwort
Ruled but the planet Venus and the element of Earth, this is a popular herb of magick among Witches. It has been associated with psychic workings since olden times and possesses a strong feminine vibration, making it especially powerful for women. Mugwort infusions, sweetened with a bit of honey, are traditionally drunk prior to scrying rituals and other forms of divination and psychic work. Many Witches even use them for washing their crystal balls, magick mirrors and other tools of scrying.
Yarrow
Ruled by the planet Venus and the element of Water, infusion made from the flowers of this highly magickal plant should be drunk by the light of a purple colored candle if you seek to awaken or strengthen your clairvoyant powers.
Broom
Ruled by the planet Mars and the element of Air, infusions of this plant were drunk once by those seeking to heighten their powers of extrasensory perception. Also known as "besom" (an old Scottish name for a Witch's broom), this plant is regarded as being mildly toxic. Therefore, internal use of it in any way is definitely not recommended.
Dandelion
Ruled by the planet Jupiter and the element of Air, the root of the dandelion is said to promote psychic powers when it is dried, roasted and ground (in the same manner as coffee) and then made into a tealike brew and drunk beneath the rays of the full moon.
A Witch's Brew for Clairvoyance
Into a cauldron / or pot of boiling water, add a handful each of shredded laurel leaves, cinquefoil, and mugwort (three herbs that have long been associated with the arts of divination and prophecy.) Cover with a lid, and boil for 13 minutes. Lift the lid of the cauldron and deeply inhale the vapors of the bubbling brew three times. Repeat this for three minutes, and if you have allowed yourself to properly enter a psychic state, you may begin to receive prophetic visions, either in the form of pictures or symbols, or perhaps in a combination of the two. When used prior to sleeping, this brew may help to induce dreams of a prophetic nature. Write down your dreams upon waking and study them for hidden meanings and messages. Re-ocurring dream symbols are highly significant.

and place them in hearths and love's look
knowing their potential for healing fire.
Because the world's spirit is being torn
we will mend our own webs of connection,
that fine lace, stretching between us
connecting us into all life, in every direction.
Because the sky is being clouded over
with smoke and dirt and armored stars
we will stand in the dark of mountains,
in backstreet alleyways and in deserts
to call out the old names of the starry ones,
the sky dancers: Astarte, Arianrhod, Venus, Aditi,
our eyes shining, our eyes shining with hope.

Annabelle Lee
By Edgar Allan Poe
It was many and many a year ago
In a kingdom by the sea
That a maiden there lived, whom you may know
By the name of Annabelle Lee
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child
In this kingdom by the sea
But we loved with a love that was more than love
I and my Annabelle Lee
With a love that winged seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me
This was the reason that, long ago
In this kingdom by the sea
That the winds came out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabelle Lee
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea
The Angels, half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me
Yes! That was the reason (as all men know
In this kingdom by the sea)
That a wind came out of a cloud by night
Chilling and killing my Annabelle Lee.
But our love, it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we,
Of many far wiser than we
And neither the Angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Could never dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabelle Lee.
For the moon never beams without giving me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabelle Lee
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of my beautiful Annabelle Lee.
And so, all the nighttide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling! My darling, my life and my bride.
In her sepulchre, there by the sea,
In her tomb, by the sounding sea.
--Edgar Allan Poe
If a dog was the teacher you would learn stuff like:When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be
pure ecstasy. When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.Let others know when they've invaded your territory.Take naps.Stretch before rising.Run, romp, and play daily.Thrive on attention and let people touch you.Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing
and pout...run right back and make friends.Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not.If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle
them gently.

Cartoon fun with your favorites, so Let's ring up the curtain on this showThose last two lines are the ones everyone leaves out. On the word "ring," he'd hit the cash register and make it ring. Then, while the music was still playing, he'd talk to the kids and tell them what was going to be on today's show. He'd also do the bit with the boxes, picking up cardboard boxes with cartoon character's faces on them, and tossing them to the kids in the studio audience for them to catch. Then, he'd stand in the middle of the floor and finish the song:Uh-oh! Something else
I've forgotten, let's see -
Of course! Gene London!
That's me!
Then a cardboard box would fall down from the ceiling onto his head and confetti would fly!
