A life can be haunted by what it never was if that were merely glimpsed

About Me

If I seem a bit stuck in the past, that's 'cos I find the past a pretty bloody interesting place. Friends say I'm a changeling - swapped by the fairies at birth. I read a lot of history. I'm fascinated by the idea of time travel. When scientists crack how to do it, I'll be first up in the queue of volunteers! Oh yes, and I write: I want to do it for a living but heaven knows it ain't easy. Think I'll use my blog as a sandbox to try out ideas...

My Interests

Music. Painting. Literature. History. I also love clothes, but not really "fashion" - I collect classic stuff, Twenties and Sixties vintage especially. Long walks. Visiting sites of decayed grandeur. Drinks with friends. My cat Cornelia, who's even more mental than I am.

I'd like to meet:

Other time-travellers and dreamers.

Music:

Classical. Folk rock. Musicals (as long as they're not by Andrew Yawn Webber).

Movies:

The Third Man, Somewhere in Time, Metropolis, Ed Wood, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Orlando, anything with Emmanuelle Beart, Daniel Auteuil or Catherine Deneuve, anything by Kubrick.

Television:

Not much worth watching, is there? Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, The 1900 House, Monty Python (when they repeat it), Ally McBeal, Newsnight (only when Paxo's on), The Blue Planet, arty docs on BBC4.

Books:

AS Byatt, Rose Tremain, Rosamond Lehmann, Virginia Woolf, Rimbaud, Homer's Odyssey, The Little Grey Men by 'BB'

Heroes:

Helen Mirren, Vassily Kandinsky, Paul Poiret, Mary Queen of Scots.

What's in a name?

I remember once reading an article, probably in the Guardian, by Tracy MacLeod. She was that walking oxymoron, an intellectual Essex Girl, who used to present the Late Show on BBC2 years ago. The gist...
