Samba Makossa!

About Me

Brazil has got soul. And Simone Moreno is funky. On stage she’s electric and once seen, you won’t forget her... Back home she’s well known, and has released four albums. Now ”Samba Makossa”, her first album in Europe and recorded in Sweden, is released on Soul Dog Records, with distribution from MConnexion.Living in Stockholm since four years, Simone Moreno has already toured extensively in Sweden and Europe with her Swedish band Os Lourinhos. A hard swinging collective, consisting of musicians who play with some of the greatest national artists in the soul/jazz/folk music and latin genres. (Robyn, Blacknuss, Ale Möller, Nils Landgren etc). Earlier she’s also toured in USA, Japan, Germany, Belgium and many more countries. Among the highlights are three performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.Last year Simone was seen at the Polar Prize of Music, at which she honoured prize winner Gilberto Gil (legendary Brazilian artist), singing together with Swedish stars Lisa Nilsson and Håkan Hellström. And maybe you’ve heard her as House Music Queen, on the radio or at a club, through collaborations with famed producers S.U.M.O, Tiger Stripes and Rasmus Faber, for whom she sang on the remix of the monster hit “E Samba”.Since “Samba Makossa” was released in Sweden, Simone’s received big attention from the press, and has appeared on radio and TV continuously. The album received top reviews and was nominated for the prestigious Manifest Prize as album of the year. She also had a major radio hit with rapper genious Timbuktu on “Vem pra Bahia (Vi drar till Malmö)”. After touring with the album in Sweden and Scandinavia this spring and summer, now it’s time to reach new territories!”Samba Makossa” is Simone’s song about her homeland. It’s a journey through the soul of Brazil. But it’s also the singer’s exciting encounter with Europe. Swinging samba and afro music meet the 70’s with heavy drums, electric pianos and funky guitars. There is the electro-samba “Meio de campo”, and Jorge Benjor’s football funk-anthem “Umbabarauma”. The title track, Chico Science’s “Samba Makossa”, is a wild futuristic maracatu, on which Simone commands her Portuguese rap phrases in between the blows of the horn section. And on the samba reggae splash ”Tolerância”, Simone is once again joined by rapper Timbuktu on the international substitute for their hit “Vi drar till Malmö”.But as opposed to this, there is also a painfully slow reggae, ”Bahia minha preta” and ”Vai vadiar”, a melancholic samba ballad in the vein of Buena Vista Social Club. Everything on “Samba Makossa” derives from Simone’s experience of the multiplicity of Brazilian music. From the Bahia where she grew up, learning how to sing from the back of a truck during the Carnival...She came to Europe and re-found her roots. But she’s dipped them in quite a bit of soul.
