}VILLU VESKI (born island of Muhu, Western Estonia), saxophone player, composer and teacher. In 1980-85 he studied saxophone at Tallinn Conservatory and in 1989 with Prof. Claude Delangle at Summer Academy in Nice of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.
In 1982-2001 Veski taught saxophone and improvisation at the Tallinna Georg Ots Music School, and since 2002 is a professor at the pop and jazz department of the Chair of Music at Viljandi Culture Academy.
Villu Veski’s repertory includes classical compositions for alto saxophone and numerous works for saxophone quartet. Since 1997 he is the artistic director of the Muhu Future Music Festival Juu Jääb.
Since its foundation in 1983, Veski plays alto saxophone in the Tallinn Saxophone Quartet. The quartet has been performed at several festivals in Estonia and abroad, e.g. at the 11th World Saxophone Congress in Valencia, Spain (1997) and the 12th World Saxophone Congress in Montreal, Canada (2000), with accordionist Tiit Kalluste also at the 2nd European Congress of Clarinet and Saxophone Association in Krakow, Poland (1998) and the 6th British Saxophone Congress in London, Great Britain (2000).
As a jazz musician, Villu Veski has founded and directed the Villu Veski Quartet (1985) and Saxappeal Band (1992-2000).
Since 1998 he has given concerts in a duet with accordionist Tiit Kalluste (Sounds of the Nordic Islands, I and II). In 2002 the V.Veski/T.Kalluste Tango Sextet was founded that collaborates with Argentinian percussionist Daniel PIPI Piazzollaga (official name Daniel Astor Piazzolla, grandson of Astor Piazzolla). He has also been a partner to singer and pianist Sergey Manukyan, singer Debbie Cameron (in Copenhagen, in 1990-94), percussionist Abdissa Assefa (Ethiopia), sitar player Baluji Shrivastav (India), Latvia pianist Raimonds Pauls, singer Laima Vaikule, Finnish vibraphone player Severi Pyysalo, pianist and composer Kristian Blak (the Faroese islands) singer Eivor Pallsdottir (Faroe Islands), Swedish bass player Anders Jormin, Danish percussionist Marylin Mazur and American saxophonist John Tchichai. He has taken part in jazz festivals Jazzkaar, Pori Jazz Festival, Bergen Nattjazz , Tbilisi International Jazz Festival, Autumn Rhythms in Leningrad , Step to Parnassus in Moscow, Adolphe Sax Jazz Festival in Dinant, Belgium, Klaipeda International Jazz Festival , Sergey Kuryokhin International Festival SKIF5 (St. Petersburg, 2001), Jazzy Colours Jazzfestival (Paris), Brussels Jazzmarathon, Inntöne Jazzfestival (Austria), Rigas Ritmi (Latvija), Rochester International Jazzfestival (USA) Concert tours and performances at festivals (solo or with ensembles) have taken Villu Veski to several Republics of the former Soviet Union, all Scandinavian countries, Belgium, the Faroese islands, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, the U.S., Argentina and Thailand. As a member of Yggdrasil, Veski performed in Copenhagen and Hawaii on the group’s concert tour.
Villu Veski has been active also as a composer: he has composed for theatres and films, incl. serials by Discovery Travel Channel and a documentary production by NDR A Journey through Estonia, the central character of which Veski is. In 1999 Veski composed the score for 13-part documentary serial Around the World in 90 Days (released in the U.S. by the title The Cruise), what was shown in November of the same year by Discovery Travel Channel (the U.S.), BBC/Flex Tech UK Style and TVF International. He also composed music for an Argentinian project Tango Nuevo (Buenos Aires 2002) and for an Hawaiian project Life Rhythm (Hawaii, 2004). In collaboration with Tiit Kikas composed music for the interval act of the Eurovision 2002 Song Contest in Tallinn.
In collaboration with various musicians, Villu Veski has recorded several records, incl. 2 LPs by Melodiya (with the Tallinn Saxophone Quartet and Sergey Manukyan & Avicenna, 1989) and CDs Oh, Lady Be Cool. Saxappeal Band (Fugata 1994), Sounds of the Nordic Islands I. Duo Villu Veski & Tiit Kalluste (OVRCD1998), Sounds of the Nordic Islands II. Villu Veski/Tiit Kalluste 5tet (TUTL 2002), Tallinn Saxophone Quartet Plays Estonian Contemporary Music (edition 49 2003), Eino Tamberg Saxophone Concerto (Antes 2000). In 2003 the first Estonian jazz DVD was released: Tango Nuevo (Villu Veski/Tiit Kalluste Tango Sextet & Daniel PIPI Piazzolla).
