Have Voice Will Sing

About Me

Hi,I am an Irish singer-writer living in London. I moved from my home town Dublin ....long time ago. I'd much rather live in New York. I write my own songs but I also love to sing other peoples' that capture me. I fell under the spell of Leonard Cohen's amazing words and sound when I was a very small girlie. My utter admiration for his work has been one of the constants in my life. This page is mostly dedicated to my interpretations of his songs. Bob Dylan is another artist who I greatly admire. At one point in my late teens I had 24 of his albums in my possession. I always think of him as the Troubadour. I think I am under his spell too. I will also be posting versions of Dylan songs I recorded over the years. There will always be one of my own songs included in the 4 to play.I sing on the London scene, mainly at jazz venues though these seem to be dying off bit by bit. I don't know why I'm in the so called jazz scene, I guess I really like the way the musicians play, the spirit of that music and the kind of creative energy that comes from improvisation. I suppose that's my idea of jazz......I think it means something different out there on the scene now. Anyway, I shall stop that right here....I have recorded 6 CDs under my own name for the Babel label and guested on many other people's recordings. Film director Mike Figgis invited me to sing a Bessie Smith song Young Woman's Blues in his docu/film called Red, White & Blues. This was part of a series of films made about the Blues for American PSB TV produced by Martin Scorcesse.I've sung at many international festivals such as Shanghai Jazz Fest., Monterey Jazz Fest U.S., Haarlem Jazz Festival, Baku Jazz Festival, Copenhagen, Varna Bulgaria, toured Yemen, Sudan, India, Syria, Hungary, Malaysia, Spain plus.... I have been up and down the M1 in this country sometimes too doing gigs in various places. Thank you for stopping by here and I hope you enjoy the versions of these songs.Love Cohen x

Band Members: Christine Tobin vocals. The tracks displayed are taken from albums recorded over the last ten years so the people playing are from various bands/line-ups .They include Phil Robson guitar, Jeremy Brown bass, Steve Watts bass, Liam Noble piano, Huw Warren piano and cello, Christine Tobin piano (Fragile Dance), Chris Higginbottom drums, Mike Pickering drums, Roy Dodds drums. My current band can include many of the above as well as Thebe Lipere percussion, Simon Lea drums, Kate Shortt cello and Dave Whitford double bass.
Influences: Needless to say Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan made a huge impact on me from a very early age. I quite often escaped into the world of their songs when I was a child. I loved many of the Beatles records too, alongside Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Later, I learned from listening to people like Betty Carter and Sheila Jordan that you can totally reset a song and come at it from a whole different angle if you dig deep into the lyrics. If you find your own story in there you can bring new colours to the harmony and build new shapes and structures. I learned about feeling a song from Billie Holiday, for me Andy Bey carries that torch today. I also learned a lot about opening up songs from Keith Jarrett's Standards Albums and so much of Miles Davis' body of work. The piano and guitar recordings of Egberto Gismonti, Steve Arguelles. Plus many more......
Sounds Like: Someone who is totally in love with Leonard Cohen's lyrics and indeed the gorgeous man himself.
