About Me

Haiku
A form of Japanese poetry consisting of three lines, with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second and five again in the third. Traditionally it contained images of nature and a word indicating the season. It was supposed to focus on sensual details rather than abstract concepts: to be like a snapshot in words.
The poetry is understood to happen between the words - this has been described as 'a sensation of space' or even an experience of God.
I'm not sure how close we can come in English to writing true haiku, Japanese being such a different language, but these days the rules are more relaxed anyway. There can be urban haiku, humorous or witty haiku, and many people don't worry about the syllable count but simply use three short lines. However it can be fun to play with the syllable count, and either way is fine. And then there's the school of thought that says rhyming couplets are the nearest English approximation to haiku, so that's another option!
HOW TO PLAY
The game is to write haiku each Friday and post them here. You are not restricted to just one per week but as many as you like. You don't have to post every week - but the more the merrier. And if you can't manage Friday ... we'll let you be late. ;)
Either Winyan or I (Rosemary) will start off each week by posting ours as a blog, then please post yours as blog comments under the same date. To give kudos, we can post replies to these comments and express our appreciation that way.
EXTRA
Sometimes we want to share haiku we love by other people, or those we wrote at other times. Please do so in the profile page Comments below. And don't forget to look for what people post here! This space is also available for your general comments, but in that case I have a request - as this is a place dedicated to the craft of language, please use your own words instead of something prefabricated.
COPYRIGHT
The copyright for all verses published here remains with the individual authors.
If you wish to further protect your copyright, please sign your haiku accordingly, with copyright symbol ©, your name and the year, e.g. © Rosemary Nissen-Wade 2006
Enjoy!
