About Me

Göran Månsson plays flutes, pipes and recorders. Göran currently ranks as one of the most exciting and dynamic flute players on the Swedish folk music scene. He comes from the town of Haverö in Norrland in the north of Sweden. As a descendant of one of Sweden's celebrated folk music families, Göran is actively furthering the Swedish folk music heritage.Göran performs with the folkmusic group Gjallarhorn and also the folk-pop group Sarek which was one of the artists in Eurovision song contest 2004. Other groups: Göran Månsson Band, Frispel and Månsson & Åberg.
He also performs as a soloist and his first solo album Inland (Drone) was released in December 2002 to widespread critical acclaim.
Mon (Nordic Tunes), released Japan in June 2006, and September 2006 in Sweden, is Göran Månssons second solo album. What is quite uniqe with this production is the meeting beetween Göran and guitarplayer Roger Tallroth (Väsen, Ann-Bjorg Lien etc.), who also is the co producer. Two innovative and strong musical personalities together on this cd. 'Mon' was nominated for the Manifest price in 2007.
Göran is very much in demand as a session musician for both early music and folk-pop recordings and has toured the world as a percussionist and flute player.
He is a graduate of the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and teaches at Ingesund College of Music in Arvika and the Royal College of Music´s Department of Folk Music in Stockholm.
Review Rootsworld:
Göran Månsson is a pioneer in using various kinds of flutes and pipes in Swedish folk music in unique ways. On Mon, Månsson presents what is really a duo recording, with Vasen's Roger Tallroth offering 4, 6, 11 and 12-stringed guitars, a bouzouki and electric bass on almost all of the tracks. The experimental flute playing of Månsson is fascinating and his approach is unique and fresh, presenting a great openness for the Swedish folk music he plays. There are influences from jazz and he does not restrict himself to playing the tunes they way they were written. Guest percussionist Petter Berndalen shares Månsson's playful ideal and together they make fun and exciting "experiments" with the rhythm and melody on a traditional polska. This quality is always there in Månsson's music, but on this track it is especially clear. What distinguishes Mon from other folk music albums is the complexity of the music. With the use of many different kinds of flutes and guitars, Månsson and Tallroth create a unusually rich sonic landscape. Månsson's phrasing gives the music a light, airy quality and the instruments sound beautiful. This is not an easy-listening Swedish folk album (sometimes the music seems to lack firm direction or meaning) but it does have many moments that are inspired and exciting. - Staffan Jonsson
