About Me

Although I was born and raised in the great city of Chicago, Ill, I currently reside in the grand metropolis New York City. I am all about anything positive and creative. I'm into reading, film, theatre, good music, laughter, and interesting people. Add some good food to any of those and I'm all set. I was raised an only child, so I often found my self in my room alone looking for ways to entertain myself. After I got tired of toys and comic books, I would get in the mirror and act out different scenes from movies and tv shows. I could always remember the lines and this would keep my attention for hours. Along the way I also fell in love with stand up comedy. I found laughter to be the greatest gift you could give someone. Problem was that I was corny as a kid so I started to "train". I began lip synching all of my comedy albums in the mirror as well. The performances would get more and more elaborate. I started to develop a sense of timing and delivery. This was the point of discovery with regards to what my lifes journey would be. By age 15 I took my first acting class. It was a college level course that was done in conjunction with DePaul University and The Goodman Theatre in Chicago. It was offered over the summer and somehow my mother got me in. I earned a B (Still kinda salty it wasn't an A!)and got completely bitten by the acting bug. By the time I was 18 I headed down south to further my education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. I soon started doing stand up around the clubs in the ATL and simultaneously discovered the theatre dept. as well. After a dichotamous and extended college career, I emerged with a bachelors degree in drama from Da House, years of valuable experience in comedy, and a burning drive to establish a career in the field of my choice. I eventually moved to NYC to do just that. I had to make some tough choices though. If it was one thing that I learned in the decade that I did stand up, it was that you have to be completely focused on that in order to get anywhere with it. So because I had so many other creative intrests, I decided to focus primarily on acting. However, As fate would have it my homegirl, Val Moore who I grew up with in Chicago would be living in New York and getting ready to launch blackfilm.com, an online magazine about the efforts of people of color on the film industry. I ended up becoming the resident host and on camera personality for the company which led me to interview various entertainment personalities and serve as MC for our live events, mainly screenings. This has given me the opportunity to stay connected to my stand up roots while still keeping focus on my acting career. Today, I have amassed a vast body of credits in film, TV, and Theatre that I'm very proud of. I still hold it down for blackfilm.com as well. It's been a long and at times tough journey but I treasure it all because it made me who I am today. Keep your eyes on the the kid because it's Onward and Upward from here! That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Peace.

My Interests

I love artistic expression. Be it visual or musical or both. Any body who knows me knows that my favorite sport is boxing. I try not to miss too many fights. I also enjoy fellowshipping with cool people who are like minded and progressive in thought.

I'd like to meet:

Interesting, elevated minded individuals. If we can network, cool. If we can find common ground in any area, cool. Also I'd like to use this as a vehicle to connect and in some cases reconnect with friends from throughout my life. As far as more intimate relationships go, I'm flattered but I'm happy to say that at the present time I have that area covered.Nasser Metcalfe's Hosting Reel

Music:

Anything good. I can appreciate just about any genre.

Movies:

Where do I begin in this category. Anybody that knows me knows that I am a true film head. People always ask me what is my favorite movie of all time. That is such a tough one for me. I love so many. Over the years two have been tied for first place. Black Orpheus and Cooley High. If you aren't up on those then do your self a favor and check for them. I have to say however that City Of God has been gaining groung lately. A true masterpiece. Some of my favorite actors are Sidney Poitier and Dustin Hoffman. As far as directors go, I dig Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, and the Cohen bros.

Television:

When The Wire starts in January it's all about HBO on Sunday nights. Until then, Celebrity Rap Superstar on MTV and the news and weather.

Books:

I tend to enjoy fiction as well as non fiction. However, I'm really into autobiographies. I find it fascinating to learn about the lifes journey of interesting people as I traverse through my own. I read the autobiography of Malcolm X when I was 11 years old and I never looked back. Some of my other favorites are Manchild In The Promised Land by Claude Brown, Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas, That's My Story And I'm Sticking To It by Spike Lee and Kaleef Afteb, and Measure Of A Man by Sidney Poitier(His second autobiography with honorable mention to his first one entitled My LIfe). I recently read The Pursiut Of Happyness by Chris Gardner and Quincy Troupe. I also recently finished reading the great John Leguizamo's Pimps, Ho's, and Playahaters, A memoir of my Hollywood freinds. It prooved very insightful as to how his personal experiences inform his work.I am currently reading Triumph: The Untold Story of Jesse Owens and Hitler's Olympics by Jeremy Schaap.

Heroes:

I have alot of people that I admire for various reasons but only a few I would call heroes. To date they would be My family, Muhammad Ali, and Malcolm X.
