"Dimebag" Darell Abbott.We have once again lost a musical legend before their time. "Dimebag" Darell Abbot was shot five times in the head, after stepping onstage to perform the first song of his Damageplan set. "Dimebag", was not only the most prominent metal guitar player of the nineties, but was also the creative genius behind Pantera. With "Dimebag"'s melodious shredding, unbeknownst soloing, and keen use of aggression. Pantera became an undying force to be reckoned with. Backed up by the best of metal musicians, "Dime", Vinnie, Rex and Phil set out to kill any pussy trend that got in their way. The day COWBOYS FROM HELL hit the world, metal was changed forever. Metal fans were changed as well. No one had heard thrash music, with such rythm and melody. Fans of the genre were also shocked by the finesse, and unmatched intensity of "Dimebag"'s solos. Every note played was a warcry, aimed at our dwindling society. With the deep south anthem that opens the record, followed by a wrecking ball second track. Songs like DOMINATION, CEMETARY GATES, and THE ART OF SHREDDING, helped "Dime" stamp his name on the metal community.
After non-stop touring, thousands of fans waited for a a follow up effort. Many doubted that COWBOYS FROM HELL could be topped, or even equaled. They were wrong. VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER gave new meaning to brutality. It was obvious the band had reached a new level. "Dimebag"'s songwriting had reached new grounds as well. With deadly intent, "Dime" set out to create his own style. A style that has been copied for years, and will continue to be mimmicked for the rest of time. "Power Groove". Once again, heading for the road, thousands of fans spawned into millions. Anthems like WALK, THIS LOVE, and FUCKING HOSTILE, left young and old craving for more. As fans piled into stadiums, COWBOYS and VULGAR both went platinum. Not only making the band a presence in the underground, but in the mainstream as well. But they were far from commercial.
In the year 1994, FAR BEYOND DRIVEN was released to the masses. This was considered by many, to be "Dimebag"'s masterpiece. Never, has there been such heavy shredding. Played with such undeniable passion. This was not ignored. FAR BEYOND DRIVEN became the first heavy metal album to ever debut .1 on the charts. Tracks like STRENGTH BEYOND STRENGTH, BECOMING, 5 MINUTES ALONE, and SLAUGHTERED, fuel evey possible emotion. This album not only left a groundshaking mark on metal, but placed "Dimebag" in the history books.
PANTERA was now a household name. Holding their rank as .1, in the thrash metal world. It was the mid' nineties, and "Dimebag"'s sound was a breath of fresh air. He shredded his way through all the grunge bullshit, and now he had his targets on something new. The crap that flooded radio.
In the summer of 1996, "Dime" released the heaviest of the heavy. An album that put the rap/nu-metal bullshit to it's knees. The name of the music couldn't of brought his point across, any clearer. THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL. Because of it's morbid sound, another side of "Dime" was now seen by the world. Blood-curdling riffs, and gut-wrenching harmonies. Pulled off, at nothing less than ferocious speeds. Gloomy ballads, that give darkness a new shade. All held together by a crunch, that gave "Dimebag" one of the best tones in guitar history. The ruthless beat-down, given by the title track, is a prime example of what's in store. Followed by the blisttering strike of songs like WAR NERVE, DRAG THE WATERS, and SUICIDE NOTE PT.2. Headbangers still had a reason to pit.
To back up up their heaviest album, they went on their heaviest tour. This is where "Dime" did what he did best. Bludgening the crowd, with ear-splitting metal. Also known for his on-stage antics, and impressive, solo improvisations. PANTERA's followers were never disappointed. They never left unscathed, either. By this point in the band's career, PANTERA had held their reputation for having one the most dangerous moshpits you could find. With aggressive music, comes hell-bent fans.
Once again. Sceptics doubted that the experience could be captured, for those at home. Once again, they were wrong. LIVE-101 PROOF was released to show that you can re-live a concert, as notorious as PANTERA's.
After a well needed break, "Dime" and the PANTERA boys, dropped the most anticipated metal album of 2000. REINVENTING THE STEEL. The name rang true, as an explosion of southern death, crippled fans across the world. "Dimebag" had finally mastered his sound. The thrash of COWBOYS FROM HELL. The groove of VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER. The heaviness of FAR BEYOND DRIVEN. The darkness of THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL, and the intensity of his live performance. Were forged together, making ten songs of artistic brilliance. HELLBOUND, GODDAMN ELECTRIC, DEATH RATTLE SHAKE, and YESTERDAY DON'T MEAN SHIT, are examples of how "Dime", reinvented metal.
"Dimebag" Darell Abbot is a hero to many. Artists, writers, fans, but most importantly, musicians. His vision proves, that you can do whatever you love. And succeed. He showed us that making music doesn't have to be just a hobby. It can be a way of life. He showed us that inspiration comes from within. Darell Abbot's spirit will live forever. It will be there with every musician, that cherished his expression. I'd like to meet this man, because he changed my life. When times got rough, he was always there to comfort me. Through thick and thin, he never left, never changed. He never judged me, or disrespected me. He stays in my heart, and will continue to give me what I need most. Fucking rock n' roll. So, I'll end my tribute with a quote from the man himself.
When asked why he records standing up. "Dimebag" replied,
"We don't go to war sittin' down."...And of course...VAN FUCKIN DAMME!!!
