I am the son of Gloria and Rafael"Lefty"Fontanez born in the Mt.Sinai Hospitol in Manhattan.we lived on 119th between 2nd and 3rd surrouned by a ton of family my grand mother Santa Cruz owned the local Social Club,my cousins Orlando(RIP), Cat Eyes(RIP)and The Famous Luis"Mono"Cruz to name a few were members of the Infamous Renegades of Harlem.
I went to Pre K and Kindergarten at P.S 96 on the same block,until 1971 when we moved up to The Bronx.My mother(Tuti),step dad Luis Torres and brother Baby Louie lived at 974 Sheridan Avenue apartment 15C,we could see Yankee stadium from out the window and hear the crowed roar!I attened school at C.E.S 35 1-4th grade and I.S 166 5-7th than we moved to Holland Avenue.
1n 1981 where I went to P.S 135 ever since I can remember I always loved Karate.Watching T.V shows in the 60's! like Get Smart(agent 99 choping necks)and the Avengers(Mrs.Peels also chopping necks) Star Trek with Captain Kirk(you gueesed it chopping necks)and of course The T.V show Kung Fu,I've been a Martial Artist since 1974 .
I'm a World Karate Champion 8 times and counting(October of 2005 was the last one).
My 1st teacher was Master Lee,who taught me in Franz Segle Park(Grand Concourse in the Bronx,the story was written in the Daily News 1994)Than on April 19th 1976 my dad paid to enroll me in Tiger Kims Karate School,on Fordham Road it's was then call Korean Karate,Tae Kwon Do.My 1st exposure to Hip Hop was listening to a tape with the L Brothers(made up of Future Legendairy Fourious and Fantastic 5 Members)I believe The Original D.J Louie Lou of the Unstoppable Crew(D.J for T-La Rock of the historical Record "IT'S YOURS " the 1st Def Jam label record,the second was a BITE by a young LL Cool J called "I need a beat!)let me us (Freddie Rojas and Carlos)here.
I started competting Natioally in 1981,I won 2 first places at the U.S Open in St.Peterburg,Florida.I first got rated #3 in Black Belt Fighting in region 11(NY & NJ)by Karate Ilustrated 1984.By 1986 I was rated Nationally and I March of 1988 I opened up New Yorks 1st Sport Karate Training Center on Westchester ave and Paker Street of course in Da Boogie Down BRONX.The school was became the most succesful new school in the country(EFC Award)In the 1st year we had 200 students!
In 1991,I got Richard"Crazy Legs"Colon to bring back the World Famous Rock Steady Crew.That same year we did the Official Reunion show,for alittle Magazine called The Source.We went on at 3:30 in the morning after K.R.S 1,(Video Music Box Taped It)I was on stage Dlone waiting for D.J (Stretch Armstrong) to drop the beat and when it did I started kicking to the beat The M.C (Q-Unique)Yelled out names first out was Crazy Legs was 2nd Steve"Mr.Wiggles"Clemente 3rd Prince Ken Swift 4th and Kwik Step(Rethem Technitions) was 5th the rest is HISTORY!!!!!!!
There also were solo's by Fables,Mr.Freeze and Italy's Mauritzio(The Next One) Klown made it out but he wasn't the only legend who didn't.The crowed went CRAZY ,I can still see D.J Q-Bert banging his cane on the stage LOL AI'll never forget that night because it changed my life 4 EVER!
