About Me

Shawn "Freshco" Conrad’s story begins as a young artist drawing his way thru William T. Sampson Elementary School (P.S. 160) in Brooklyn New York. Shawn would go from a local Roller Hockey award-winning champ to the dance-skate pro of the Fancy Wheelers and Starlight Rollers. Shawn was now nicknamed “Magic” for his skating ability.
The year 1989 was huge for Shawn! As Freshco, he released his first record “4 At A Time” as a label mate of Queen Latifah and De La Soul. The lackluster label promotion and sales performance of the record was quickly redeemed as Freshco would go on to win the World Championship Rap contest in front of industry celebrities like P. Diddy, MC Lyte, Ice-T and a capacity crowd at the Red Zone night club in New York.
When it looked like the Rap career of Freshco was dying down, he found himself enrolled at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn New York. He focused on becoming a Physical Therapist this time. However, before he would complete the last few credits for his Bachelor’s degree, he received a phone call from Damon Dash (Rocca Wear / Roccafella Records). Freshco’s lyrical performance on a compilation record that featured an up & coming Jay-Z, literally blew Damon’s mind! Artistically, Freshco decided to try his hand at making his own music for his raps by building his own sound studio at home. Freshco has been dubbed one of Hip Hop’s greatest lyricists over the years. One popular example is when he went verse for verse with the late great Notorious B.I.G. in 1994.
In 1997 Freshco was given a studio suite in Soundtrack New York to do post-production audio for radio and television commercials. The satisfaction of hearing and seeing his audio work on the radio and television daily, left a great sense of career accomplishment. Health benefits and a six-figure income potential is now what motivated Freshco to continue doing post-production sound work for television.
While Fresh was doing sound for The Matrix and South Park commercials, he still found enough leisure time to become one of the 2001 Citywide One-Wall Handball doubles champions of New York. While he worked on shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon, Shawn was asked to host the Fox T.V. Saturday morning kid’s lineup for a day. In 2004, Freshco pressed up a few copies of a Gospel Hip Hop album called Heaven Yeah!. This release was an effort to bridge the gap between young people, church and faith. At the time he had no clue that there were still loyal Freshco fans all over the world wondering where he was.

Influences: LL and Run ripping down the Fresh Fest concerts back in the day at Madison Square Garden. Howie Tee's basement studio set-up back in the day. Lee Haney for being so down to earth even after toppling Arnold Squash-a-negger's Mr. Olympia record. Watching Fabel and Boots (Kool Kieth) pop in the Roxy when I was sneakin' in with the fake I.D. as a kid. Lastly, DJ Professor Paul aka Preacher Paul (for those of you who really know your Brooklyn DJ history).
