Sundown and/or Last Stand (SAOLS) is the electro-acoustic musical construct of Melbourne based composer and producer Adam Hunt.
Formed in 2003, SAOLS is a musical shape shifter whose form melds and transforms from the individual to the ensemble, from modest to ostentatious.
Hunt’s works blend musical mediums in a framework that is driven by an interest in the rhythmic and aesthetic precision of electronic music, the melodic composition of classical music and the pure raw energy of punk.
SAOLS have a strong focus on experimenting with the many intricate processes incorporated in making their music. An orchestral depth of sound is created utilising guitar, percussion and other numerous instruments and incorporating effects, loop mixing, layering and sampling. To capture the desired sounds Hunt often sources collaborators.
“This Means War”
The title track from the EP ‘This Means War’ was pieced together through layering guitar and drums. Originally started out just with guitars but later introduced Andy Fumberger(Drums) bringing the perfect percussive element in to the mix. This Means War, Motherfucker!!!
“Dance of the Queen of Thieves”
A new element of sound was introduced in early 2008 with Jed bringing some electronic beats to the table. Vocals now were taking a strong role with Jez providing insane noises. This song was originally recorded live at Halogen Studios. Later Adam took the tracks and layered guitars and bass bringing an orchestral staccato rhythm throughout. Big pulsating guitars build with beats and vocals swirling out of control.
"Find Your Burning Horse" & "Ride It To The Sun"
These two pieces are actually the same track on the EP ‘This Means War’, but due to upload restraints the song needed to be cut by 5min and then sliced into two tracks. The original raw tracking was done at RMIT studios and was then taken back to Halogen to construct the blending of swell & ebb. Friend and musician Luke(Drums) came on board for the EP recording and several shows. Classical pianist Jemima Martin also introduced her unique sound. Johnny(Alithia), a good friend of Adams joined in on bass to fuse this recording together. Post-Production brought producer/musician Jesse Donelan on side and took the songs to where they are today.
"Shotgun And The Crooked Smile"
This song is off the EP ‘Follow The Sounds Of Families Running’. The song starts with a confusion of rattly guitars, swirling around a giddy rhythm, giving the feeling of being unsure about whats to come. A melody emerges bringing a sense of structure and contentment. The drums(Fumberger) then pound in, swelling a movement of synchronised guitars all aiming for one point in the sky. The volume increases and the pressure builds until the storage place for this sound breaks at the seams, shatters and screams. The sound is then thrown around in an insane wave before crashing down into a pit of forgetfulness.
"The Electric Schizophrenic And The First Fall"
This is the first time vocals are introduced into the sound of SAOLS. From the ‘This Means War’ EP. With many of the same members as Find Your Burning Horse and Ride It To The Sun but introducing Brad on bass and Tom on guitars. The song slowly builds a pace of travelling and longing for hope. Rousvanis injects an overwhelming sense of pain into the soul of every listener with his vocals. Martin covers the mind with beautiful angelic vocals. The song comes to a rest with the ambient noise of a digital plane floating away.
