STRAIGHT BLUNT PUFFIN' MADNESS!!!

About Me

From their ground breaking performance at the 2005 Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, in front of over 10,000 people, the dub & the restless received an enthusiastic crowd response, that merited an amazing encore!!!Formed in the fall of 2003, the band is unique, because it can be seen as a "DUB COLLECTIVE"; as all five members are seasoned reggae musicians coming from other groups, putting a new spin on the traditional dub reggae sound. The group was formed by drummer Jonathan Shykofsky, who had a very distinctive vision of what he hoped to create. He was after a sound that would be true to what people expected from dub reggae music, but also to blend in what was unexpected, conjuring up the element of surprise. His past experience came from playing in the highly successful group, EQUALIZER, (http://www.myspace.com/equalizerband), a seven piece reggae band, that quickly built a local following in Montreal, and earned itself opening slots for big name artists like Burning Spear, Michael Rose, and Andrew Tosh. Both Thierry Dansereau on bass, and Mathieu Thibodeau on lead guitar, come from Mellow Mood, the very successful Bob Marley tribute band, and Kulcha Connection. On rhythm guitar and lead vocals, is Mark Mahoney, and on keyboards is Joey Shanahan, who both have their own reggae band, INWORD.Check out INWORD's roots reggae vibe here, (http://www.myspace.com/inword)Rooted in the deep groove and tradition of dub reggae music. They take a very innovative approach to the music, and turn it into some new experimental rhythms. The result is a contagious aesthetic, that fuses elements of reggae, rock, jazz within the element of space, often associated with dub reggae rhythms. Their influences come from the likes of Burning Spear, King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry, Jah Cure, and of course Bob Marley, the teacher for all of us. DJ Skeptik, is added to the mix, providing the turntablism, taking the band into a new blend of dub reggae music. The horns are compliments of The Soul Jazz Orchestra. The bands songs, are a mix of cover selections from the ever popular, Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions series, as well as some of the newer reggae rhythms, and the many distinguished strong and original song writings of guitarist and vocalist, Mark Mahoney. What emerges is an ear catching boundary melting musical hybrid, that bespeaks a surprising level of maturity, with meditations on the depths of existence.Their appeal, is in their ability to transcend the unexpected in dub reggae rhythms, creating lots of echo and reverb effects, as Jonathan likes to say, "we would like it to sound like two people falling down the stairs, instead of just one...!"Myspace Contact Tables , hosting by Imgdump.net
