About Me

Well where should I start, my name is Jose, I’m a pretty average guy that likes his Heinekens cold and likes his metal heavy. I'm a metalhead and I play bass , here's my story....
I was born in a small town in Mexico called “Iguala, Guerrero”, I grew up in a typical Mexican upbringing.
Born to a mostly Catholic society, people down there take their religion very seriously! Daily activities, town festivities and basically everything else fell around the church.
Needless to say I was a bit of an outcast, I had a million questions about everything but no answers. My father was an immigrant to the U.S.A which was both cool and sad, sad because I only got to see him once or twice a year. I can remember one of the first times I ever heard of this “Heavy Metal” music was when my dad came home one year, as a kid one of the first things I would do is go through his bags to see what he had brought from “El Norte”.
On this particular occasion he had a bunch of cassette tapes. Among them there was one that caught my attention.
It was Led Zeppelin’s first album!
I hadn’t heard anything like that before!! Zeppelin was my introduction to hard rock and it would eventually open the door for me to become a metalhead.
Later on during my teen years I started to get a boner for moving to the U.S.
I did so and it was not easy, I didn’t speak a word of English, I only had $20 in my pocket that my dad gave me before I arrived and oddly enough I used it to buy my first cd ever! Metallica’s “…..And Justice For All”
It was around this time that I started to get introduced to all froms of heavy metal. In due time I met up with a coupl of guys that had a band, even though they were a lot older than me, I loved it! I played my first lie show in a small bar in Elgin, IL, I actually had a friend of mine sneak me trough the back door ‘cause I was underage! LOL
Ever since that day I developed a passion for playing live. Music is a way of expressing your self through this artform. People can judge me by my musical taste but in all honesty I don’t really care. I can’t live my life trying to please everybody. It might sound kind of selfish but I can only please myself and do what meakes me happy, and that’s all that matters.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Recently I’ve had the pleasure to join the crew of Chicagosrock.com as a contributing reporter, my friend Mario Salazar has done an excellent job in helping to keep the rock scene alive and kicking in Chicago. Reviews are done for the most part on a weekly basis so check it out!

My Interests

I am a notaphilist , you can see my collection here , it’s just a bit of my nerdy side but I really like to see people’s reactions when I show them my collection, specially if they remember a certain note from their past, it brings them back a lot of memories and the stories just seem to come out without me asking for them.

I also like to party with my buddies at any local show or whenever a national act comes by. I support local music and if you from this area I encourage you to do so as well, Chicago has so many good bands to see, it’s up to us the fans to make them be noticed, so get yer ass out to a show!!!

I'd like to meet:

I am on myspace to meet new people, it's as simple as that. If I request you as a friend it's because you seem interesting and might have something in common to chat about. For the most part I accept adds from almost anyone, especially bands. I live a very public life and if we ever run into each other don't be a stranger, come up and say hi

Music:

.. First and foremost, Ronnie James Dio is in my humble opinion, the absolute greatest Heavy Metal singer EVER!!I have all his CD's and DVD's not to mention countless bootlegs that I've collected over the years. Whether it's with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, or DIO,the man is a powerhouse of a vocalist and he's proven himself to be a true warrior by never bending over to the trends or the times.

Secondly, I'm a bass player, but one of my biggest musical inspirations comes from a guitar player. His name is Ritchie Blackmore. The man was eons ahead of his time, he is one of the most copied musicians on the planet, I too sometimes catch myself throwing a Ritchie pose on stage every now and then. From DEEP PURPLE to RAINBOW, he made some of the best hard rock music ever made and he invented the measuring stick that other guitarists are measured by, but lack in comparison. Not since JIMI HENDRIX have I've heard a guitarist play with such passion and stamina, it's as if he and the guitar had the same blood running through them, absolutely amazing.

And finally, the reason I play bass and music at all is due to the absolute best heavy metal band on the planet....IRON MAIDEN!! When I was 16 years old, all I wanted to do was to be a heavy metal guitar player. I bought a used Washburn guitar, a Crate amp and started to take guitar lessons from a friend. One day he asked me if I had heard of a band called IRON MAIDEN and I said no. He recommended I check'em out. A couple of days later I went cd shopping and I bought "IRON MAIDEN: LIVE AFTER DEATH" and the rest as they say is history. I could not believe this guy was playing bass like that with NO PICK! "How does he do that?" I asked my friend on the next guitar lesson we had, he had a bass on hand and he showed me the notes for the main riff of "THE TROOPER" and I took it from there. Such was the impression that IRON MAIDEN and Steve Harris (maiden's bass player) made on me that I decided to give up my life long dream of becoming a guitar player to pursue my new passion, playing bass!!!

Movies:

I’m not too much into the “must see” movies, I like dramas and historical stuff. Some of my favorites are Braveheart, Gods and Generals, Gettysburg, Amistad and so on, I like to watch foreign films and stuff, especially if they are in another language, it takes me back to when I was a kid and watching movies in English and not knowing what was going on.

Television:

When I’m not watching my concert dvds and bootlegs (which takes up 99% of my time) I like to watch the History channel and CNN. Comedy Central is one of my favorite channels, I also like the Daily Show and Jay Leno.
