BOOKS...The only book anyone ever needs to read in their lifetime is "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein; a children's book, yes, but if all who read it follow its message, the world would be a much better place! Also - "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" - Maya Angelou (never less than life-affirming!), all of J D Salinger's work (favourite is "Franny And Zooey" ); "Player Piano", "Breakfast of Champions", "Slaughterhouse 5", "Deadeye Dick" (Kurt Vonnegut); "Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas", "Fear & Loathing On The Campaign Trail" (funniest book on American politics ever!)- Hunter S. Thompson; F. Scott Fitzgerald (a fellow hopeless romantic); "Mystic River" by Dennis Lehane (one of those wonderful surprises you occasionally get when you just grab a book off the library shelf - this one stays with you for days after you finish reading it); "Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test" - Tom Wolfe; "Caroline and Her Friends" series by Pierre Probst (was rapt by these as a child and still think they're amazing); "On The Road" - Kerouac; Kinky Friedman (great characters, both human and animal!); Doonesbury.
