My work is mainly painting based but I have recently been producing video and testing the limits of this format. The basis of my work is looking at expressing the emotional in a physical visual form. Specifically I have been looking at anxiety and social phobia. Currently the starting point is distortion; I have looked at this thorough portraiture and crowd scenes, the latter I am trying to move towards. Photography and digital manipulation play a large part in the early stages of my work and then are taken back in to painting, changing them again from a digital representation back in to a painterly organic representation.
My method of painting is expressionistic and abstract and considers taking a form based subject and removing any recognisable form from it. In the near future I will try and refine my painting skills to be able to successfully depict the emotions I am looking at and to move away from singular figure depiction. I will look more at the crowd and the metropolitan society we live in. I have also been exploring video, trying to use this to realise an emotion and create an emotion in the viewer. As the field and nature of my work is very personal it is important to discover the reactions and emotions in the viewer.
My work looks at the medical/psychological area of anxiety and is centred around anxiety attacks and social phobia. As I am a sufferer of these conditions I have used my knowledge of the feelings and emotions to try and show them in a visual way. Simply I aim to make the mental visual. This year I have tried to take my work to the next stage, to push my skills in the depiction of these intense emotions. I have explored using Video and Projection, photography and painting. My painting skills have stayed centred around crowd scenes and caging, I have also taken my work to a more theatrical level, exploring this through photography and Video. Again I have kept backgrounds stark and have looked at blurring and distortion to try and convey the very quick almost instant onset of such attacks and how lonely the person feels.
